Office Chair Turns White
Admin October 08, 2026
Measures to address the issue of an office chair turning white should be tailored based on the material and the cause of the whitening, as detailed below:

Plastic office chairs often turn white due to environmental aging, chemical erosion, physical friction, or stress. Common treatment methods include:
- Flame torch baking method: For surface roughness and whitening caused by ultraviolet erosion, workers commonly use a flame torch to heat the discolored area. The principle is that high temperatures rearrange the molecules on the plastic surface, restoring some of the original color, but temperature control is necessary to avoid deformation or burning.
- Cleaner wiping: Mild oxidation or stains can be wiped with a damp cloth dipped in a neutral cleaner (such as dishwashing liquid). For stubborn stains, try a baking soda paste (baking soda mixed with water to form a paste) or a specialized plastic cleaner. Avoid using cleaners containing solvents or strong acids or bases.
- Physical polishing: If the whitening is caused by surface scratches, lightly sand with fine sandpaper (such as 2000 grit or higher), then restore the shine with a plastic polish. Be sure to apply even pressure to avoid further damage.
The causes of whitening in leather office chairs are complex and require treatment based on the specific cause:
- Sweat stains and salt efflorescence: Salt residues from sweat can form white crystals. Spray a neutral leather cleaner onto a microfiber cloth and gently wipe in a circular motion. Avoid directly spraying the cleaner onto the leather to prevent moisture absorption and deformation.
- UV or moisture damage: Prolonged exposure to sunlight or a humid environment can damage the leather's oil layer, leading to whitening and cracking. Use a professional leather conditioner (containing natural wax or oil components) to replenish nutrients and restore shine and flexibility.
- Coating process defects: If the whitening is caused by uneven coating or material issues during production, contact the manufacturer for replacement or repair. Self-treatment may exacerbate the damage.
For white-painted office chairs that turn yellow and then white, proceed with caution:
- Toothpaste light wiping method: The tiny particles in toothpaste can remove a slight oxidation layer. Dip a soft cloth in a small amount of toothpaste and wipe in a circular motion, then rinse with water and polish. Avoid applying excessive force to prevent damage to the paint film.
- Vinegar water wiping: Add a small amount of vinegar to hot water (approximately a 1:10 ratio), dip a soft cloth in the solution, and wipe the whitened area. Acetic acid can neutralize alkaline stains. After wiping, immediately dry with a cloth and polish.
- Contraindications: Avoid directly wiping white-painted surfaces with water, soapy water, or alkaline water, as this can accelerate oxidation or cause the paint to become cloudy.
