Office Chair Tread Test

Admin October 19, 2026

The office chair tread test mainly includes footrest static pressure test, footrest vertical durability test, and other related tests specified in the EN 1335 standard, as detailed below:

The footrest static pressure test is carried out in accordance with the EN 1335 standard and primarily targets the extendable footrest part of office chairs. During the test, a machine capable of applying a vertical downward pressure is used to simulate the uniform pressure exerted by the sole of a human foot on the pedal. The test process is carried out in stages. The initial load is used to stabilize the system. Subsequently, the pressure is gradually increased to a preset standard value to simulate the foot pressure of an adult with a standard weight and maintained for a specified period. During this time, the deformation of the footrest structure is closely monitored. Moreover, this test is conducted through multiple cycles to simulate the number of times the footrest is subjected to pressure over several years of use, thereby observing its fatigue characteristics. The evaluation indicators cover deformation, cracks or fractures, and whether the function is normal after the test. These indicators are used to comprehensively determine the yield strength of the material, the anti-creep ability of the structure, and the firmness of the connecting components.

The detection objects of the footrest vertical durability test include the entire system, such as the pedal surface, support frame, connecting arms, rotating shafts, and fasteners. By simulating the reciprocating vertical loads applied by the feet to the footrest during daily use, the structural durability, anti-fatigue ability, and reliability of the connecting parts of the footrest under long-term cyclic loading conditions are evaluated. The main inspection items include structural integrity inspection to observe whether there are phenomena such as fractures, cracks, or weld detachment; the anti-loosening ability of fasteners and connecting parts to verify whether the connecting parts show severe loosening, detachment, or loss of normal folding/unfolding functions after tens of thousands of cycles; and the measurement of permanent deformation to measure the deflection change before and after cyclic loading and determine whether the structural stiffness meets the standard.

In addition, there are other related tests in the EN 1335 standard. The footrest durability test (Foot rest durability) is one of them. Together with the footrest static pressure test, it forms a comprehensive evaluation of the footrest performance, ensuring the quality and safety of the office chair footrest from different perspectives.
