Office Chair Tray Wobble

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair tray wobble can be resolved through step-by-step troubleshooting and targeted repairs. In most cases, it can be handled independently, but severe malfunctions require contacting a professional.

1. Safety Inspection and Initial Observation

First, place the chair in an unloaded, flat position. Focus on inspecting areas such as the connection between the five-claw bracket of the tray and the casters, the central turntable, and the interface of the gas lift for any cracks, deformations, or detached components. Manually shake the seat to identify the source of the wobble: if the wobble is concentrated at the connection between the seat cushion and the tray, it may be an issue with the upper mechanical connection; if the wobble originates from the connection between the tray and the gas lift or casters, the lower structure needs to be examined.

2. In-Depth Cause Diagnosis

  1. Loose Mechanical Connections: Prolonged use may cause the screws connecting the seat cushion to the tray and the tray to the five-claw bracket to loosen imperceptibly. It is essential to check the tightness of these screws.
  2. Worn Nylon Sliders/Plastic Clips: If the nylon sliders or fixed clips inside the tray that control the tilt angle show signs of whitening, brittleness, or wear, it can lead to increased component clearance and cause wobbling.
  3. Aging Interface Components: The metal clips or inner plastic sleeves at the interface between the gas lift and the tray may wear out or loosen, resulting in an unstable connection.
  4. Gas Lift Issues: If the wobble is accompanied by a malfunctioning lift or slow sinking, it may be due to gas leakage inside the gas lift, leading to decreased sealing performance.
  5. Other Factors: A thin or unevenly textured tray may cause deformation and resonance; friction between the tray and surrounding components or unreasonable structural design leading to uneven force distribution; loose screws at the connection between the five-claw base and the chair legs or worn wheel hubs forming unstable pivot points can all indirectly cause wobbling.

3. Targeted Repair Operations

  1. Screw Tightening: Use appropriate tools to tighten all visible connecting screws one by one. It is recommended to check them monthly to prevent loosening.
  2. Replacement of Worn Parts: If the nylon sliders, plastic clips, or interface plastic sleeves are worn, purchase corresponding replacement parts for installation.
  3. Complete Tray Replacement: If the metal structure of the tray is severely deformed or worn beyond repair, replace it with a new tray of the same model or a universal model.
  4. Gas Lift Handling: If the gas lift is aging and causing decreased sealing performance, replace it with a new gas lift of the appropriate model.
  5. Special Case Handling: If the screws are stripped, wrap Teflon tape around them to increase friction or replace them with larger screws or use thread repair tools.

4. Daily Maintenance Recommendations

Regularly check the tightness of the screws, the condition of the gas lift, and the wear level of the foot protectors; avoid using the chair on uneven ground or in long-term damp environments to reduce the risk of component damage. If there are internal malfunctions in the gas lift or severe structural deformation, it is advisable to contact a professional repair technician.
