Office Chair Tray Cracked

Admin October 10, 2026

It is generally recommended to directly replace an office chair tray when it is cracked. If the crack is extremely small and does not affect safety, the possibility of repair can be carefully evaluated, but replacement is a more prudent choice.

Replacement is the Mainstream Solution

As the core component connecting the seat and the gas lift, the office chair tray is responsible for functions such as height and tilt adjustment. It usually contains complex mechanical structures inside, such as springs, gears, and limit devices. When a crack appears in the tray, it means the material strength has been compromised. Continuing to use it may lead to further structural failure and even safety hazards, such as the sudden dropping of the seat or loss of control over the tilt function. According to industry experience, over 90% of tray damage cases are ultimately resolved through replacement, especially for plastic or metal trays. Once cracked, self-repair is difficult to restore their original load-bearing capacity.

Limitations of Self-Repair

If the crack is very small (e.g., width < 0.5mm and no tendency to expand) and the tray is made of metal, you can try filling the crack with a special metal adhesive (such as epoxy resin adhesive). However, note the following:

  1. Clean the surface: Sand the area around the crack to remove oil stains and oxide layers, ensuring the adhesive adheres firmly.
  2. Secure the crack: Use clamps or tape to temporarily fix the tray to prevent the crack from expanding during the repair process.
  3. Layered filling: Apply the adhesive in 2-3 layers, with an interval of 10-15 minutes between each layer, to ensure dense filling.
  4. Test after curing: After complete curing (usually takes 24 hours), check if the repaired area is flat and simulate daily use scenarios (such as adjusting the height and tilt) to test stability.
It should be emphasized: This method is only suitable for scenarios where the crack is extremely small and the tray structure is simple. After repair, regularly check if the crack expands. If the tray is made of plastic or the crack involves critical structures (such as the connection to the gas lift), self-repair may lead to more severe damage.

Precautions for Replacing the Tray

  1. Match the model: Record the size (such as diameter and thickness) and interface type (such as thread specifications and clip forms) of the original tray to ensure the new tray is compatible with the seat and gas lift.
  2. Installation sequence: Usually, you need to first remove the seat, then loosen the fixing screws of the tray. When installing, align the interfaces and tighten the screws evenly.
  3. Function test: After installation, repeatedly adjust the height and tilt functions to confirm there is no jamming, abnormal noise, or looseness.
If you are not familiar with the operation, it is recommended to contact furniture repair personnel or the brand's after-sales service to avoid secondary damage caused by improper installation.
