Office Chair Transfer

Admin October 08, 2026

Office chair transfer requires corresponding methods based on different scenarios, as detailed below:

I. Moving the Office Chair Forward or Backward

The standard operation involves adjusting the gas lift lever or the slide rail unlocking mechanism at the bottom of the chair. For most ergonomic office chairs, the adjustment mechanisms are concentrated beneath the seat. Users can stand beside the chair, reach out to touch the circular knob or lever at the connection point between the chair legs and the seat, press it down, and then push the chair forward or backward along the floor to the desired position. Release the knob to automatically lock the chair in place. If the chair has a five-star base with casters, be mindful of controlling the force when pushing to avoid colliding with surrounding objects. For old-style fixed-leg office chairs, first loosen the fixing screws beneath the chair legs, adjust the position, and then tighten them back. It is advisable to consult the instruction manual to confirm the structure before operation.

II. Handling the Transfer of Old Office Chairs

When moving offices before holidays, the disposal of old chairs should be categorized into 'usable' and 'should be discarded':

  • Chairs that can be resold must meet conditions such as smooth height adjustment, flexible casters, and intact backrests. Chairs with cracked frames or safety hazards in the gas lift should be scrapped directly.
  • Branded chairs or old chairs in good condition have a much higher resale value than scrap recycling prices. Before disposal, take photos to record the model and prioritize local recycling channels in regions like Jiangsu, Zhejiang, and Shanghai (usually with same-day on-site valuation in the same city).
  • When the new office needs to retain chairs, negotiate with the supplier for a 'trade-in' deal, where usable old chairs can be discounted to offset part of the purchase cost.

III. Modifying a Regular Office Chair to Be Mobile for Easier Transfer

The core modification method is to install casters, following these steps:

  1. Prepare materials: Select compatible casters (preferably self-tapping swivel casters, such as silent rubber casters with a single load capacity of โ‰ฅ40kg) and tools (screwdriver, tape measure).
  2. Installation steps: Turn the chair upside down and remove the original plastic pads. Use a tape measure to measure the four corners at the bottom of the chair legs and mark the center positions for the casters. Align the center holes of the casters with the marked points, insert the self-tapping screws vertically, and rotate them clockwise to secure them (drill holes first if the chair leg material is hard). Check the firmness and then conduct no-load and load tests.
  3. Precautions: If the chair moves in a skewed direction, adjust the installation angle of the casters or replace them with casters that distribute the load more evenly. After modification, avoid using the chair on uneven or slippery surfaces. Regularly inspect the casters for wear and replace aging parts promptly.
