Solutions for an Office Chair That is Too Tall
The following methods can be used to solve the problem of an office chair that is too tall:

1. Adjust the Chair Height
Most office chairs are equipped with pneumatic height adjustment mechanisms. To adjust, press the control handle located at the lower part of the chair while using your body weight to press down or lift up the seat to the appropriate height. Before operation, ensure that the chair is in the unlocked state to avoid adjustment failure due to locking.
2. Add Footrests or Support Objects
- Simple Footrests: Place wooden boards, cardboard, or stacked books under the chair to temporarily raise the ground contact point. Ensure that the support objects are stable and non-slip.
- Professional Footrests: Choose silicone or plastic footrests with anti-slip textures. These can not only provide stable height increase but also distribute foot pressure and enhance comfort.
3. Change Sitting Posture and Foot Position
- Forward-Leaning Posture: Lean your body slightly forward so that your toes touch the ground. This can stretch the waist muscles and relieve fatigue from prolonged sitting, but control the time to avoid posture deformation.
- Foot Support: Use a low stool or footrest to keep your feet level, reducing pressure on blood vessels and nerves and preventing lower limb edema.
4. Replace the Gas Cylinder (for Fixed Chairs)
- Remove the Old Gas Cylinder: Turn the chair upside down and use a slender tool (such as a screwdriver) to press the spring clip inside the base while pulling out the gas cylinder upwards. If it is stuck, apply cooking oil to the connection for lubrication, wait 20 minutes to 2 hours, and then gently tap it with a hammer to loosen it.
- Install the New Gas Cylinder: Choose a safe and reliable brand (such as the Korean SHS carbon black inner cylinder) and vertically insert the new gas cylinder into the base hole and secure it.
- Safety Tips: Do not disassemble by hammering, prying hard, or heating to avoid damaging components or causing explosion risks. Gas cylinders are inexpensive (about 19 yuan) and can be replaced in just 3 minutes by yourself.
5. Install Adjustable Footrests
If the chair is only a few millimeters to 1 centimeter too tall, you can choose footrests with height adjustment functions. Adjust the support height by rotating or sliding to avoid the cumbersome operation of replacing the gas cylinder.
6. Auxiliary Support and Seat Adjustment
- Backrest Support: Add soft pillows or memory foam pads to the backrest to fill the gap at the waist and reduce muscle fatigue.
- Stack Seats: Place a low stool or ergonomic seat cushion to shorten the distance between your body and the desktop and reduce waist pressure.
7. Replace the Office Chair
If the above methods are ineffective, it is recommended to replace the office chair with one that is ergonomically designed. Prioritize models with adjustable height, backrest, and armrests to suit different body types and usage scenarios.
