Solutions for a Low Office Chair

Admin October 09, 2026

The issue of a low office chair can be resolved through the following methods, depending on the chair type and actual situation:

1. Adjust the height using the adjustment lever Most office chairs are equipped with a height-adjustment lever (usually a black or silver metal lever located beneath or on the side of the seat). To adjust, first locate the lever, then lift or press it while gently pressing or lifting the seat with your body to change the height. Some chairs have a locking function on the lever; after adjusting to the desired height, reset the lever to secure the height. The ideal height standard is to have both feet flat on the ground and knees bent at a 90ยฐ angle, avoiding a suspended waist or pressure on the legs. If the chair is too low, causing the knees to be higher than the hips, the pressure on the lumbar spine will increase significantly, potentially leading to health issues such as lumbar muscle strain and herniated discs.

2. Replace the gas lift (for cases where the adjustment lever fails) If the adjustment lever does not work properly, it may be due to an aging or damaged gas lift. In this case, purchase a compatible new gas lift (ensuring that parameters such as weight capacity and tube diameter match the original chair), remove the old gas lift, and install the new one in its place. Before operating, be sure to release the seat pressure: adjust the chair to its lowest height to prevent the gas lift from suddenly popping out and causing injury during disassembly. After replacement, test whether the adjustment function works properly.

3. Adjust the chair feet (for chairs without adjustment functions) If the chair has a fixed height design and cannot have its components replaced, place stable materials such as wooden boards or rubber pads (with a recommended thickness of no more than 5 cm) under the chair feet to indirectly raise the seat by increasing the height of the chair feet. Ensure that the padding is flat and stable to prevent the chair from tilting and causing a risk of tipping over. This method is a temporary solution, and long-term use may affect the stability of the chair.

4. Handling special cases

  • Electric office chairs: If the chair is equipped with electric adjustment functions, the height can be automatically adjusted using the buttons on the side of the seat (usually marked with up and down arrows). If the buttons do not work, check whether the power connection is normal or contact after-sales service for repairs.
  • Old-style fixed-height chairs: If the chair has no adjustment devices and cannot be resolved by adding padding, contact a professional furniture repair shop to install a height-adjustment device (such as a gas lift or mechanical adjustment structure), but evaluate whether the modification cost matches the value of the chair.

Health tip: Long-term use of a low office chair forces the body to lean forward, increasing the burden on the cervical and lumbar spines. It is recommended to prioritize resolving height issues through adjustment or component replacement rather than relying solely on padding. If adjustments still do not meet ergonomic needs, consider replacing the chair with one that meets standards.
