Office Chair Too Loose
Admin October 10, 2026
An overly loose office chair can be resolved by identifying the loose parts and making targeted repairs. Here are the specific methods:

I. Identifying the Loose Parts
- Testing the Recline Position: If there is significant shaking and a clicking noise when reclining, it is likely that the adjustment lever screws are not tightened properly. If the chair back lacks rebound force or cannot maintain a fixed angle, the spring or gas lift may be aged.
- Observing the Gaps at the Connections: Use a phone flashlight to illuminate the connection area between the chair back and the base. If there are obvious gaps or misaligned parts, you can further locate the problem.
- Checking the Spring and Gas Lift: Manually press the chair back. If the spring lacks elasticity or the gas lift provides insufficient support (e.g., sinks too quickly), focus on inspecting these components.
II. Targeted Repair Solutions
Loose Adjustment Lever Screws
- Use a Phillips screwdriver to turn counterclockwise and remove the plastic cover at the base connection, exposing the metal frame.
- Use a wrench to tighten the 6-8 fixing screws one by one. It is recommended to operate symmetrically at 90ยฐ intervals to avoid uneven force that could deform the parts.
- After tightening, test the stability of the chair back to ensure there is no shaking or noise.
Failed Spring Retention
- Locate the spring pin at the bottom of the chair back and use needle-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot.
- If the spring is deformed (e.g., stretched too long or bent), measure the original spring length and purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm online (costing about 5-15 yuan). Ensure both ends of the spring are firmly fixed during installation.
Excessive Gap in the Gas Lift
- Remove the dust cover at the bottom of the seat and locate the gas lift adjustment knob (usually a black plastic part).
- Turn the knob counterclockwise to increase the support force. Test the rebound resistance every 30ยฐ of rotation until the chair back can stably maintain the desired angle.
- If adjustment is ineffective, the internal seals of the gas lift may be aged, and a new gas lift needs to be replaced (it is recommended to contact the manufacturer or a professional repair technician).
III. Emergency Reinforcement Techniques (Without Professional Tools)
- Bicycle Inner Tube Reinforcement: Cut the inner tube into 3cm-wide strips and wrap them around the seam between the chair back and the base to reduce shaking by increasing friction. This can maintain stability for 3-7 days.
- Rubber Band Tying: Use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift, limiting its swing range. This is suitable for temporary emergencies, but note that rubber bands are prone to aging and breaking and need to be replaced regularly.
Tip: If the problem persists after repair or involves damage to core components such as the gas lift or metal frame, it is recommended to contact the manufacturer's after-sales service or a professional repair technician to avoid safety hazards caused by self-disassembly.
