Office Chair Too Concave
Admin October 09, 2026
Attention should be paid to the issue of an office chair being too concave, as it may lead to health and property damage problems and should be addressed promptly.

Health Damage
- Spinal Problems: When the middle of the chair is concave, the waist will be left hanging in the air, forcing the lumbar spine to collapse downward, disrupting the natural curve of the spine and potentially leading to lumbar disc herniation in severe cases.
- Bone Injuries: The coccyx may directly hit the hard bottom, posing a risk of fracture; the back of the thighs, pressed by the edge of the chair, may experience numbness and swelling in the legs and feet due to obstructed blood circulation.
- Muscle Tension: The continuous effort of the waist and back muscles to maintain balance will lead to tension in the erector spinae muscles, eventually developing into scoliosis.
- Hygiene Risks: Sweat and dander can easily accumulate in the concave groove, fostering the growth of Escherichia coli and causing skin infections.
Property Damage
- Material Wear and Tear: The failure of the sponge support layer will accelerate material wear and tear. When spring-supported and honeycomb aluminum structure seat cushions show significant deformation, the internal support system is usually 70% fractured, and the center collapse exceeds a five-kilogram sinking amount, the buffer life of the sponge will be shortened by about 60%.
- Seat Side Slippage: If there is a significant weight difference among colleagues in the unit and the support strength of the chair frame is not uniform, it is highly likely that the frame will tilt, posing a risk of seat side slippage.
Judgment Method
To determine whether an office chair needs repair or replacement, stand up and observe whether the seat cushion depression significantly recovers after five minutes. If the rebound time exceeds ten minutes and edge wrinkles form, it indicates that the elastic support structure is inactive; during testing, if it takes more than three bounces to return to the original shape after pressing with both hands, it indicates that the core material is beginning to deteriorate and stratify.
Remedial Measures
- Choose the Right Chair: For example, an ergonomic chair can support the waist and disperse pressure, reducing health problems caused by a chair that is too concave.
- Adjust Habits: Stand up and move around for 8 minutes every 20 minutes of sitting, keeping the knees and elbows at a 90-degree angle to promote blood circulation and relieve muscle tension.
