Transforming an Office Chair into a Wheelchair
An office chair can achieve mobility similar to a wheelchair by replacing its wheels, adding mobility aids, or modifying the original seat, but attention should be paid to floor protection, stability checks, and weight capacity limitations during use.

Replacing with Rolling Casters
Most standard office chairs come with fixed casters at the bottom, which can be replaced. First, confirm the caster specifications, including the mounting hole diameter (commonly 10mm or 12mm), thread type (metric or imperial), and weight capacity requirements (typically needing to support 100-150kg). When selecting compatible casters, prioritize nylon (wear-resistant) or polyurethane (quiet) swivel casters (360ยฐ rotation) to avoid scratching the floor with metal wheels. To install, flip the chair over, use a wrench or screwdriver to remove the original fixed casters (press-fit types can be removed by pressing directly), align the new casters with the mounting holes and tighten clockwise (press-fit types are fixed by pressing directly), and finally check that the casters rotate smoothly and remain secure under load.Adding Mobility Aids
If the casters cannot be removed (e.g., integrated chair bases), auxiliary solutions can be used. One option is to install a mobility tray; select a swivel caster tray that fits the chair base dimensions (with 4-5 casters at the bottom) and place the chair on it for mobility, ensuring the tray's weight capacity matches the chair's weight. Another option is to attach quiet caster stickers; apply small, adhesive-backed casters (2-3cm in diameter) to the chair's bottom foot pads, suitable for lightweight office chairs (recommended weight capacity not exceeding 80kg).Modifying with Original Seat
Using the original seat as an example, you can use 40120 aluminum alloy profiles to form a three-sided box with a bottom plate, securing it with the original seat's four mounting holes for easy and sturdy assembly. For wheels, it is recommended to use double-wheel medical casters, which glide smoothly and quietly while protecting the floor.
Precautions
- Floor Protection: For hardwood or marble floors, choose quiet casters with brake functions to prevent scratches.
- Stability Check: After replacement, test the chair's balance during movement to avoid tipping.
- Weight Capacity Limitation: The caster's weight capacity should exceed the chair's maximum usage weight (including the user's weight), with a general recommendation of โฅ120kg for office chair casters.
