Transforming an Office Chair into a Trolley

Admin October 10, 2026

Transforming an office chair into a trolley can be achieved by installing wheels to enable mobility. Here are the specific steps and extended transformation ideas:

Basic Transformation: Installing Wheels for Mobility

  1. Material Preparation and Compatibility Check

    • Purchase a wheel set that matches the chair's structure, prioritizing swivel wheels with self-tapping screws (such as silent rubber wheels), ensuring each wheel can bear a load of โ‰ฅ40kg. If the chair legs are made of metal, prepare additional matching screws; for wooden or plastic legs, self-tapping screws can be directly used for fixation.
    • Prepare tools: a screwdriver (cross-head or flat-head, depending on the type of self-tapping screws) and a tape measure (for measuring the distance between chair legs to ensure symmetrical wheel installation).
  2. Removing Existing Components

    • Turn the chair upside down with the legs facing up and place a soft cloth underneath to prevent scratches. Use the screwdriver to rotate counterclockwise and remove the self-tapping screws from the original plastic pads, keeping the screws for later use (if the wheels come with their own screws, this step can be skipped).
  3. Installing the Wheels

    • Use the tape measure to measure the four corners at the bottom of the chair legs and mark the center positions for the wheels, ensuring the four wheels are arranged in a rectangular pattern to prevent offset and chair wobbling.
    • Align the center hole of the wheel with the marked point, insert the self-tapping screw vertically, and rotate it clockwise until the wheel base is tightly attached to the chair leg. If the chair leg material is hard (such as metal), drill a hole at the marked point (with a diameter slightly smaller than the screw) before inserting the screw for fixation; for soft materials (such as wood), the self-tapping screw can directly penetrate.
    • After installation, gently shake the wheels by hand to confirm there is no looseness or wobbling, and tighten all the fixing screws.
  4. Testing and Adjustment

    • Turn the chair upright and gently push it to observe if the movement is smooth and if the wheels turn flexibly.
    • Sit on the chair and move slowly to check the load-bearing stability. If there is stuttering or abnormal noise, re-tighten the screws or replace the wheels; if the chair moves in a skewed direction, adjust the wheel installation angle (such as slightly rotating the wheel base) or replace the wheels with more evenly distributed load-bearing capacity to solve the problem.

Extended Transformation: Designing a Trolley with Richer Functions

  1. Combining with Old Furniture Transformation

    • If the chair is in a relatively dilapidated condition, it can be disassembled, keeping the frame and wheel parts, and then reassembled into a trolley. For example, cover the tabletop with waterproof material (such as plastic cloth or plywood) to prevent water stains from penetrating; you can also design grooves on the tabletop according to needs to fix water buckets or add a rotatable tray to facilitate adjusting the water-pouring direction.
  2. Simplified Transformation Plan

    • If simplicity is pursued, the old chair frame can be directly used, equipped with four small wheels and a small handle to make a small trolley for children to play with or to transport lightweight items.
