Conversion of Office Chair to Tatami Chair
Admin October 09, 2026
There is currently no standardized solution for directly converting an office chair into a tatami chair, but similar functionality can be achieved through DIY ideas or finished product alternatives.

I. DIY Conversion Ideas (Requires some hands-on skills)
Structural Modification
- Backrest Adjustment: If the office chair supports multi-angle adjustment (such as a 120ยฐ-160ยฐ reclining function), its reclining mode can be directly utilized to simulate the semi-reclined posture of a tatami chair. If the backrest is fixed, the original backrest needs to be removed, and an adjustable hinge or hydraulic rod should be installed to enable free adjustment of the backrest angle.
- Seat Extension: Tatami chairs typically have wider seats. Wooden or plastic extension panels can be added to both sides of the office chair seat (the original chair dimensions need to be measured to ensure a match), or a wider seat cushion (such as a futon or thick sponge cushion) can be directly replaced.
- Footrest Design: If the office chair comes with a footrest, the height of the footrest can be adjusted to be level with the seat, creating a flat sitting posture similar to that of a tatami. If there is no footrest, a foldable footrest can be purchased separately or a wooden box or low stool can be used as a substitute.
Material Selection
- Support Structure: If reinforcement of the modified parts is required, it is recommended to use lightweight but strong load-bearing materials (such as aluminum alloy or engineering plastics) to avoid adding excessive weight that affects mobility.
- Soft Upholstery: The seat and backrest can be wrapped in cotton and linen or velvet fabric, with high-density sponge filling inside to enhance comfort and align with the tatami style.
Precautions
- Stability: After modification, the center of gravity of the chair should be tested to avoid the risk of tipping over due to structural changes.
- Compatibility: If the office chair has a gas lift adjustment function, it should be ensured that the modification does not affect the normal operation of the gas lift.
II. Finished Product Alternatives (Recommended for those without DIY experience)
Multi-functional Office Chairs
- Choose an office chair with a footrest and a 160ยฐ reclining function (such as some gaming chairs or ergonomic chairs), and directly use it with a tatami mat. This retains the office function while achieving a leisurely experience similar to that of a tatami chair through the reclining mode.
Lazy Sofa-type Tatami Chairs
- Purchase a lazy sofa with a five-position adjustable backrest (such as a bean bag chair or a folding tatami chair). Its wide seat and low design are closer to those of a traditional tatami chair, and it can meet sitting and lying needs without modification.
Combination Solution
- Use an ordinary office chair with a movable footrest and a futon. By adjusting the height of the footrest and the position of the futon, a flat sitting posture similar to that of a tatami chair can be simulated. This option has a lower cost and high flexibility.
Summary: If you insist on modifying an office chair, you need to focus on solving the problems of backrest adjustment, seat extension, and footrest design. If you pursue convenience, directly choosing a multi-functional office chair or a lazy sofa-type finished product is more efficient.
