Office Chair to Seat Cushion Modification

Admin October 19, 2026

There are mainly two methods for modifying an office chair into a seat cushion:

I. DIY with Foam Padding This method is suitable for second-hand office chairs whose seat cushions have lost their elasticity. First, purchase foam padding suitable for the chair, ensuring its size matches the original cushion. During modification, remove the U-shaped staples from the back of the cushion to separate the leather or fabric on the seat surface from the supporting wooden board. Then, pull apart the strings securing the leather cover and foam pad, and remove the deformed or inelastic foam pad. Trim the new foam pad according to its shape requirements, and stack multiple layers if additional thickness is needed. Place the trimmed new foam pad back in its original position, tighten the seat cover to fit snugly, and then use a U-shaped stapler to reattach the cover's edge to the wooden board following the original staple hole arrangement. Finally, reinstall the seat onto the chair frame, ensuring it is securely attached. Key Points: Reserve edges for securing during trimming, and keep the staple holes aligned when using the stapler to avoid a skewed cover.

II. Fabric-Wrapped Foam Pad Modification This method is suitable for chairs that have been used for a long time and require an overall refurbishment. Prepare tools such as 1.5 - 2 meters of fabric, a screwdriver, a pry bar, a ruler, chalk, scissors, and a stapler. The modification steps are as follows:

  1. Remove the Seat Cushion: Flip the chair over, use a screwdriver and pry bar to remove the screws and nails securing the cushion, and carefully detach the cushion.
  2. Handle the Foam Pad: If the old foam pad is severely worn, replace it with a new one and trim it to the size of the cushion; if there is no significant deformation, keep the original foam pad.
  3. Trim the Fabric: Lay the fabric face down flat, place the cushion on it, leave a 10 - 12 cm gap on each side, mark with chalk, and then cut.
  4. Secure the Fabric: Fix the center of the cushion onto the fabric, ensuring the fabric is smooth without wrinkles and the pattern is in the right position. Roll up the reserved fabric, start stapling from one side, leave a 2 - 2.5 cm space at the corners, finish stapling one side, and then turn to staple the other side, keeping the fabric flat.
  5. Reinstall: Place the sewn cushion back onto the chair, secure the nails or tighten the screws in their original positions, ensuring the cushion is stable. Key Points: Reserve enough edges on the fabric for sewing, and gradually secure the fabric from the center outward during sewing to prevent the fabric from shifting or wrinkling.

Both methods require adjusting the operation details according to the actual size and material of the chair. After modification, check the stability and comfort of the cushion to ensure safe use.
