Adjusting an Office Chair to a Recliner
Admin October 16, 2026
To adjust an office chair to a recliner, first confirm that the chair has a reclining function, then operate it according to the control type, and make other relevant adjustments to enhance comfort.

First, observe and confirm:
- Find the control lever/knob: Sit down and let your hands hang down on either side of the seat or on the inner side under the armrests, feeling for any protruding lever, round knob, or button with an illustration.
- Identify the type: Common control types include single-lever control (usually near the lower right side of the seat, but may also be on the left), separate controls (two independent levers for controlling seat height and reclining function respectively, with the reclining lever possibly near the bottom of the backrest), knob/dial (often on one side under the seat or at the connection of the backrest), and buttons (commonly found on high-end ergonomic chairs, possibly integrated on the armrests or the side of the seat).
- Check the manual: If the chair is newly purchased or the manual is still available, turn to the sections on tilt adjustment, reclining function, or recliner mode to view the illustrations; you can continue exploring even if the manual is not found.
- Key confirmation point: The chair must have a reclining function. Some basic and simple office chairs may only have a height adjustment function. If the backrest of the seat is completely fixed, it cannot be adjusted to a reclined position.
Next, unlock the backrest - activate the tilting mechanism:
- Find the dedicated reclining control: Distinguish between the height adjustment lever and the reclining function lever/button. The height adjustment lever is usually located directly under the seat, while the reclining control device is usually slightly further back or closer to the connection of the backrest.
- Operation method: For single-lever operation, hold the main control lever with your right (or left) hand, slightly lift or pull it backward, and lean back at the same time; for separate lever operation, find the independent lever specifically for controlling the tilting function, lift it upward or pull it backward directly, and lean back at the same time; for knob/dial operation, find the knob, rotate/dial it in the unlocking direction, and lean back at the same time; for button operation, press the button marked with recliner, tilt, or angle icons, and lean back at the same time.
Finally, you can make other adjustment methods: such as adjusting the seat height, front-back position, and tilt angle, adjusting the backrest tilt angle, adjusting the armrest height, and adjusting the recliner angle, etc., to provide appropriate support and relaxation for your body.
