Office Chair Tipping Over

Admin October 11, 2026

The issue of office chair tipping over can be effectively prevented through scientific testing and comprehensive safeguard measures. Office chair tipping over not only affects the user experience but may also cause personal injuries. It requires a systematic approach from four aspects: testing types, equipment and methods, standards and regulations, and safeguard measures.

Tipping Test Types

Tipping tests are divided into two categories: forward tipping tests and backward tipping tests. The forward tipping test is a core project for evaluating the structural safety of seats. It uses a dedicated tipping test machine to measure the minimum force or torque required for the chair to tip over, as well as the critical angle, ensuring that the chair will not tip forward during normal use or accidental force application. The backward tipping test simulates scenarios such as users leaning back, stretching, or turning around to retrieve items, checking whether the chair's center of gravity is reasonably positioned and whether the footrest or base support is stable. It is applicable to various types of products, including wooden chairs, metal chairs, upholstered chairs, and office chairs.

Testing Equipment and Methods

Professional testing relies on a dedicated tipping test machine, which consists of a rigid test platform, a drive unit, a force sensor, an angle measuring instrument, and safety protection devices. It can accurately simulate tipping scenarios and record data. For daily simple tests, the "rear leg lift-off method" can be used: Place the chair on a stable surface, adjust the height so that the seat is level with the knees, and tilt backward until the rear legs lift off the ground. If the chair remains balanced, it indicates that the stability is acceptable; otherwise, adjustments to the chair's height, angle, or leg position are required.

Testing Standards and Regulations

Internationally, the ISO 7174 series standard "Furniture - Determination of Stability of Chairs" is widely adopted, specifying parameters such as force values, angles, and test methods for tipping tests. Although specific clauses have not been clearly identified in search results in China, the forward tipping test is a key link in meeting national mandatory safety standards, and enterprises must ensure that their products pass relevant certifications.

Safeguard Measures

  1. Select Appropriate Chairs: Adjust the height, seat depth, width, and backrest height of office chairs according to employees' heights and body types to ensure adequate body support and avoid tipping risks due to structural discomfort.
  2. Strengthen Usage Training: Train employees on how to properly adjust chairs, maintain correct sitting postures (such as keeping the waist against the backrest and feet flat on the ground), and avoid dangerous actions such as rapid sliding or violent turning.
  3. Regular Maintenance and Inspections: Establish an office chair inspection system, focusing on checking whether components such as casters, gas rods, and bases are loose or damaged. Promptly replace aging parts to ensure that chairs always comply with safety standards.
