What to Do if an Office Chair Tilts Left and Right

Admin October 08, 2026

Repair measures can be taken for an office chair that tilts left and right depending on the cause. Details are as follows:

Damaged Gas Cylinder

The gas cylinder is conical at the top and bottom, fitting into the chair base and the seat plate respectively, serving to connect and support. If the gas cylinder is damaged, the chair will lose balance and tilt left and right. When replacing the gas cylinder, first lift the chair to make the chair baseๆ‚ฌ็ฉบ (hang in the air), and use a rubber mallet to strike the chair base from top to bottom until the rubber joint loosens. When disassembling, first remove the chair base, then turn the chair upside down, hold the gas cylinder, and strike the seat plate until it falls off. Be careful not to strike the gas cylinder directly.

Seat Plate Malfunction

The seat plate is the core component connecting the gas cylinder and the seat cushion. After long-term use, it may break, age, or the connection at the five-star base may loosen, causing the chair to shake or even tilt. If the seat plate is broken or severely aged, consider replacing the parts or contacting a professional repair technician.

Loose Screws

Loose screws on the armrests or the connection between the seat plate and the chair base can not only cause noise but also make the chair shift and tilt. Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the screws counterclockwise, add a small amount of lubricant, and then tighten them clockwise. Be careful not to overexert. If the screw hole is worn, you can dip a toothpick or a thin wooden stick in white glue and insert it into the screw hole. After the glue dries, screw in the screw again. This can effectively reinforce it.

Uneven Ground or Worn Chair Feet

If the ground where the chair is placed is uneven or one of the chair feet is more worn, the chair will tilt to one side when sat on. You can use rubber pads to elevate the shorter leg(s); or use an angle grinder or 80-grit sandpaper to sand down the longer chair legs, adjusting their length with the chair seat as the horizontal reference. A more convenient way is to use adjustable feet, which can be screwed directly onto the bottom of the chair. Rotate them to slightly adjust the height, making them suitable for different floors such as tiles and wooden floors.

Misaligned T-Frame or Tray

If the chair is tilted after installation, it may be because the T-frame was installed crookedly. The solution is to loosen the screws of the T-frame, adjust the angle, and then tighten the screws again. It may also be because the tray was installed crookedly. The solution is to loosen the four screws, adjust the position, straighten it, and then tighten the screws again.
