Solution for Office Chair Tilting Back

Admin October 16, 2026

The solution for an office chair tilting back depends on the specific type and cause. Here are common situations and corresponding measures:

If the front end of an executive chair tilts up (due to prolonged use without leaning against the wall)

This issue is mainly caused by the lever principle: when a person leans forward, the projection point of the center of gravity moves beyond the front support point of the chair (such as the front casters), creating a torque that lifts the rear part.

  • Immediate adjustments and usage habits:
    • Keep the center of gravity centered: When sitting down, try to press your buttocks against the backrest so that your body's center of gravity falls in the center-rear area of the seat, avoiding forward leaning that shifts the center of gravity forward.
    • Standardize the getting-up action: When preparing to get up, first lightly hold the desktop or a stable armrest with your hands to disperse the forward-leaning force, and then slowly stand up to reduce the impact on the front end of the chair.
    • Adjust the seat height: Ensure that your feet can be placed flat on the ground and your thighs are parallel to the ground to avoid forward leaning due to improper height.
  • Inspection and simple adjustments:
    • Confirm that all casters are in full contact with the ground without being suspended or damaged. If the casters are damaged, replace them with new ones or contact after-sales service for repair.

If the backrest of an office chair tilts backward

This issue may involve angle adjustment, structural damage, or gas lift failure and requires targeted handling:

  • Adjust the backrest recline angle:
    • Find the adjustment handle on the right side of the seat, sit on the chair and pull the handle, lean your back back slightly with force, and the backrest will be fixed at the current angle when you release the handle.
    • To return it to the original angle, pull the handle again, relax your back, and the backrest will spring back to its original position.
  • Backrest flattening operation:
    • There is usually a lever under the right armrest. Pulling the lever can flatten the backrest to a horizontal position, which is suitable for short rests.
  • Front-back rocking control and troubleshooting:
    • The black cylinder in front of the chair's gas lift can be rotated left and right to adjust the rocking amplitude. If the rocking is abnormal, check whether the spring is damaged and replace the support if necessary.
    • If the backrest frequently tilts backward, focus on checking whether the gas lift is damaged. The quality of the gas lift directly affects the stability of the chair. If it has not passed safety certifications (such as SGS, BIFMA, etc.), it is recommended to replace the entire chair to ensure safety.

Precautions: If self-adjustment is ineffective or involves gas lift replacement, it is recommended to contact professional repair personnel or brand after-sales service to avoid safety hazards caused by improper operation.
