Repair of Broken Tilt on Office Chair

Admin October 16, 2026

The repair of a broken tilt on an office chair should be carried out according to the specific cause. Here are common causes and solutions:

Wheel Issues

If the chair tilts due to bent, deformed, or damaged wheel feet, first place the chair upright to ensure each wheel foot touches the ground, and then invert it to check for signs of damage on the wheel feet. If damaged wheels are found, it is recommended to purchase a new set of matching wheels. You can contact the chair manufacturer for the model number to order matching wheel feet, or remove an old wheel and take it to an office supplies store to find a matching replacement set, paying attention to matching the shape and size of the wheel axle. When removing the casters, hold the caster wheel with one hand and the bottom of the chair with the other hand and pull hard. If the caster foot is stuck, insert the blade of a flat-head screwdriver into the small gap between the caster foot and the chair contact point, and use it as a lever to operate slowly back and forth. Pull out about 1 centimeter and then pull the caster foot again. In a very small number of cases, the casters are fixed to the bottom of the chair with screws. When you see the screw head, use a screwdriver to loosen the screw and remove the caster. Before installing new wheels, apply a small amount of spray lubricant (such as WD - 40) to each socket on the chair base. Insert the straw into the spray nozzle and insert it into each socket for a quick spray, about half a second per socket. If you don't have spray lubricant, apply a pea-sized amount of Vaseline to the axle of each wheel. Use a rubber mallet to tap each caster into its chair socket. Align the caster rod with the intended base, push it gently with your hand first. If it doesn't fit into place, gently tap the caster with a rubber mallet until the rod is fully inserted into the base. If the caster design allows, tapping near the base of the stem can reduce the risk of deformation or breakage. Finally, turn the chair upside down and sit on it to test the new wheels. If they roll smoothly and evenly and the chair no longer tilts, the repair is complete. If it still tilts, continue to check the seat plate.

Iron Plate and Seat Issues

If the iron plate at the bottom of the office chair is cracked and the seat is sunken, contact professional repair personnel to replace the base plates of all affected office chairs. If the crack in the iron plate is closely related to the seat hydraulic column, direct welding at high temperatures may damage the internal seals of the hydraulic column and cause it to malfunction. You can sprinkle water immediately after welding for cooling. You can also use a discarded beverage bottle, drill a few small holes in the bottle cap, to make a simple spray bottle for cooling. After repairing the damaged parts, perform additional welding reinforcement on areas with potential crack risks.

Tilt Mechanism or Component Issues

If the components are naturally loose due to long-term use of the chair, they can be solved by simple adjustment and tightening. If the components are damaged, they need to be replaced with corresponding parts. Most office chairs have a tilt adjustment mechanism, usually located under the chair or at the connection between the seat cushion and the backrest. You can adjust the tilt angle according to your weight and preference. If the chair tilts forward, try adjusting this mechanism to restore it to the correct position. The specific operation method varies depending on the chair model and usually involves rotating or sliding a certain part to adjust the tilt. If the office chair does not have an obvious tilt adjustment mechanism or the problem persists after adjustment, check other components of the chair, especially the connecting screws and support rods. They may be loose or damaged due to long-term use or improper use. In this case, use appropriate tools to tighten the screws or replace the damaged components.

Other Causes

If the chair has a forward-tilt function but the adjustment device is not properly fixed, you can turn it off using the physical locking button on the seat base. When the connecting parts are worn or loose, tighten or replace the screws. If long-term use habits cause the steel in the legs to deform, the chair needs to be replaced. If there is an assembly error, reassemble it correctly. Ground adaptation issues can be solved by adjusting the wheel lock function or using wooden shims for balance.
