Office Chair Testing

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair testing mainly includes two major aspects: testing of gas springs in office chairs and testing of office work chairs.

Testing of Gas Springs in Office Chairs:

  • Testing Objects and Scope: Gas springs use high-pressure nitrogen as the working medium. The testing covers individual gas springs, lifting column assemblies, and the entire assembled chair. Individual testing focuses on support force, sealing, and lifespan; testing of assemblies and the entire chair focuses on smooth lifting, abnormal noises, and the fit quality with the seat surface and chassis. Key component materials are also within the testing scope.
  • Sample Collection and Conditioning: Sampling should be carried out randomly from the same batch of products, with the quantity following product standard regulations. Samples should be packaged intact, unopened inventory items. Before testing, they should be placed under standard environmental conditions to allow the sample temperature to balance with the environment, eliminating interference from transportation bumps and temperature differences on measurement results.
  • Appearance and Dimension Inspection: Appearance inspection uses visual inspection combined with touch to check for uniform coating and plating; dimension inspection covers cylinder outer diameter, piston rod diameter, etc., using vernier calipers, micrometers, and specialized measuring tools.
  • Installation Method Inspection: Verify the coaxiality and connection clearance of the interfaces at both ends. Loose interfaces can cause chair body wobbling, and center distance deviations may result in improper installation or restricted travel.
  • Force Characteristics and Sealing Performance Testing: Conducted on a gas spring performance testing machine or an electronic universal testing machine. The testing machine compresses and returns the piston rod at a constant speed while synchronously collecting force values.

Testing of Office Work Chairs:

  • Testing Items and Scope: Comprehensively covers physical and mechanical properties, safety performance, material environmental friendliness, and ergonomic characteristics. Specifically, it includes stability, strength and durability, safety, limits of harmful substances, and verification of ergonomic dimensions and adjustment functions. The testing scope targets finished chairs, applicable to various types of office swivel chairs made of different materials, focusing on evaluating their comprehensive performance under simulated normal use and foreseeable misuse conditions.
  • Testing Instruments and Equipment Used: Core equipment includes universal material testing machines, multi-functional seat fatigue testing machines, etc., with auxiliary tools such as various dimension measuring instruments and loading weights.
  • Standard Testing Methods and Procedures: Begin with sample preparation, ensuring the tested work chair is a fully assembled finished product and conditioned in a standard temperature and humidity environment. Calibrate all measuring instruments before formal testing. The testing steps usually start with dimension and appearance inspections, followed by stability testing, then strength and durability testing, safety testing to check for sharp edges, etc. Harmful substance testing requires sampling, pre-treatment, and on-machine analysis according to specified methods, with original data recorded simultaneously.
