Office Chair Test Explosion

Admin October 19, 2026

The explosion of office chairs is mainly related to quality defects in the gas springs, with inferior gas springs being the core risk source. According to the sampling inspection data from the State Administration for Market Regulation, in 2020, the non-compliance rate of office chairs reached 23.3%, among which 17 batches of swivel chairs were judged non-compliant due to issues with the gas springs, mainly involving substandard high- and low-temperature resistance and the lack of explosion-proof steel plates. The following provides an explanation from three aspects: causes, preventive measures, and compliance standards.

Causes of Explosion

  1. Structural Defects in Gas Springs
    Inferior gas springs have insufficient wall thickness (usually less than 2 millimeters). When frequently raised and lowered or under heavy pressure, the walls may break due to metal fatigue or pressure imbalance. Some products use compressed air instead of high-purity nitrogen as the filling gas to reduce costs. The oxygen in the air can easily trigger oxidation reactions at high temperatures, accelerating wall corrosion.

  2. Material and Process Issues
    The purity of the inert gas inside the gas spring is insufficient (qualified products should reach over 99%), or the filling gas is replaced by compressed air, leading to a decrease in gas stability. In addition, some products do not pass the 120,000-impact test (required by the QB/T 2280-2016 standard). When frequently raised and lowered, the internal temperature rises sharply, which may trigger gas expansion and explosion.

  3. Lack of Safety Design
    An explosion-proof steel plate (with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters) is not installed between the seat cushion and the gas spring, or the quality of the steel plate is substandard. When the gas spring breaks, the explosion-proof steel plate can block high-speed flying metal fragments, reducing the risk of injury to the human body.

Preventive Measures

  1. Choose Regular Products
    Give priority to brand-name office chairs priced at over 200 yuan and avoid purchasing products without production licenses or of unknown origin. Regular manufacturers usually use gas springs that comply with the QB/T 2280-2016 standard and have passed certifications such as high- and low-temperature resistance and impact tests.

  2. Inspect Key Components

    • Smoothness of the Gas Rod: The lifting and lowering should be smooth without jams. If there are abnormal noises or uneven resistance, there may be internal structural defects.
    • Verification of the Explosion-Proof Steel Plate: Press the bottom of the seat cushion with your hand. If you can clearly feel a metal plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters, it meets the safety requirements.
  3. Usage Habits
    Avoid frequently and rapidly raising and lowering the seat to reduce temperature fluctuations inside the gas spring; regularly inspect the appearance of the gas spring. If you find wall dents, air leaks, or rust, replace it immediately.

Compliance Standards for Qualified Products

Qualified office chairs must meet the following conditions:

  • The gas spring passes the 120,000-impact test, and the nitrogen purity is at least 99%;
  • The high- and low-temperature resistance meets the standard (no deformation or air leaks in an environment from -20ยฐC to 60ยฐC);
  • An explosion-proof steel plate with a thickness of at least 2 millimeters is installed between the seat cushion and the gas spring;
  • The product is labeled with the implementation standard QB/T 2280-2016.

By strictly controlling product quality and usage specifications, the risk of office chair explosions can be effectively reduced.
