Office Chair Term

Admin October 08, 2026

The formal term for office chairs is 'office chair'. It is a general term for various types of chairs equipped to meet work requirements in daily work and social activities. Based on differences in usage scenarios and functions, their classification can be understood from two dimensions: narrow and broad.

Narrow office chairs specifically refer to backrest chairs used for desk work while sitting. These chairs typically have basic functions such as adjustable height and backrest support, with a design focus on meeting basic office needs, such as staff chairs and conference chairs. Their core feature is to fit the height of the desk, ensuring that users maintain a correct sitting posture and reduce fatigue from prolonged sitting. For example, the adjustable height range of the seat surface of an ordinary staff chair is usually 40-50 centimeters to accommodate users of different heights.

Broad office chairs cover all chairs used in office scenarios, including but not limited to the following types:

  • Executive chairs (boss chairs): As a typical representative of broad office chairs, they are usually equipped with high backrests, headrests, armrests, and adjustable functions. The materials are mostly genuine leather or high-density sponge, with a design emphasizing comfort and authority, commonly found in management offices.
  • Mid-back chairs: Their size and functions are between executive chairs and staff chairs, suitable for middle managers or small conference rooms.
  • Guest chairs/visitor chairs: They have a simple design, mostly using lightweight materials for easy movement, and are used in reception areas or temporary meeting scenarios.
  • Training chairs: They have a lightweight structure and can be stacked for storage, suitable for training rooms or multi-functional halls.
  • Ergonomic chairs: Through adjustable lumbar supports, headrests, armrests, and other designs, they fit the curve of the human spine, disperse pressure, and long-term use can reduce the risk of back diseases, representing healthy office products.

In addition, swivel chairs, due to their 360-degree rotation function, are often classified as office chairs or computer chairs. Their wheeled base design further enhances mobility, making them suitable for scenarios that require frequent adjustment of sitting posture or collaboration with multiple people.

The classification standards for office chairs reflect a deep integration of function and scenario, from basic support to health optimization, and from single-purpose to multi-functional adaptation, meeting the diverse needs of modern office scenarios.
