Reupholstering an Office Swivel Chair

Admin October 11, 2026

Reupholstering an office swivel chair requires following steps and paying attention to fabric selection and tool preparation. Details are as follows:

I. Preparation

  1. Assess the condition of the swivel chair: Check if the wooden frame is sturdy and ensure there are no loose or damaged parts to avoid accidents during the reupholstering process due to structural issues.
  2. Determine the fixing method of the old leather: Observe whether the old leather is fixed with screws, plastic clips, staples, or glue. For example, the bottom of the seat may be fixed with screws, and the backrest may be fixed with clips or glue. Knowing the fixing method helps in choosing the appropriate disassembly tools.
  3. Prepare tools and materials:
    • Tools: Screwdrivers (flat-head and Phillips-head), wrenches, pliers, utility knives (or sharp scissors), tape measures, flexible rulers, pencils, staple guns, power drills (if new holes need to be drilled), hair dryers, gloves.
    • Materials: New leather (such as microfiber leather, tech fabric, genuine leather, etc.), eco-friendly sofa adhesive, padding (optional, such as high-density foam), staples, wood screws (which may need to be replaced), double-sided tape, clean cloths.

II. Operating Steps

  1. Safely disassemble the old leather:
    • Invert the chair or adjust it to an angle that facilitates operation. Locate all the fixing points, such as the screws at the bottom of the seat and the clips at the back of the backrest.
    • Use the corresponding tools to remove the screws, clips, and other fixing parts. If encountering glued parts, use the hot air from a hair dryer to soften the glue and then carefully peel off the old leather with a scraper to avoid damaging the wood finish or getting burned.
    • Clean the wooden chair frame to ensure there are no residual glue blocks or old nails, keeping it clean, dry, and flat.
  2. Accurately measure and cut the new leather: Use a tape measure to measure the length (from front to back at the most convex part) and width (from left to right at the widest part) of the seat cushion, and cut the new leather according to the measured results.
  3. Install the new leather: Use a staple gun to fix the new leather to the wooden frame. If necessary, use sofa adhesive to assist in fixing to ensure the leather is flat and wrinkle-free.

III. Fabric Selection Suggestions

  1. Genuine leather: It has the best texture but is expensive, afraid of water and sunlight, and requires regular maintenance. It is suitable for users with sufficient budget and willingness to maintain it.
  2. Ordinary PU leather or PVC leather: It is cheap but has poor aging resistance and is prone to cracking and peeling in two or three years. It is suitable for short-term use.
  3. Microfiber leather: It is a high-end category among synthetic leathers, with good abrasion resistance and hydrolysis resistance, and better breathability than ordinary synthetic leathers. It has a moderate price and is a cost-effective choice.

IV. Purchase Points

  1. Check the abrasion resistance and hydrolysis resistance indicators: The higher the indicators, the longer the service life of the chair and the less likely it is to crack.
  2. Smell the odor: Inferior materials will have a pungent odor and should be avoided.
  3. Check the details: Neat stitching and thick fabric reflect the quality of the materials used and ensure reliable quality.
