Office Chair Swivel Column

Admin October 12, 2026

The office chair swivel column usually refers to a gas spring or related adjustment mechanism, with core functions including height adjustment, recline tension control, and angle locking adjustment. It is important to avoid improper use to prevent safety hazards.

Height Adjustment Function of the Gas Spring

The gas spring is the core component of the swivel column, filled with high-pressure nitrogen gas. It enables chair height adjustment by compressing or releasing the gas. When the user twists the handle at the bottom of the chair, the piston inside the gas spring moves, altering the gas volume and thus adjusting the chair height. For example, pressing the handle downward compresses the gas, lowering the chair; pulling the handle upward releases the gas, raising the chair. This design ensures the chair remains stable at the desired height, accommodating users of different heights or varying desk heights.

Recline Tension Adjustment Function

Some advanced models of swivel columns are equipped with recline tension adjustment mechanisms, typically located on the side or bottom of the cylinder, controlled by a knob. Turning the knob counterclockwise reduces the tightness of the chair back's recline, suitable for users who are lighter in weight or prefer a more relaxed recline. Turning it clockwise increases the recline resistance, meeting the needs of heavier users or those requiring a fixed sitting posture. For instance, the recline tension can be set higher for office work to maintain an upright position, and lower for relaxation during breaks.

Angle Locking Adjustment Function for Recline

Some computer chair swivel columns support angle locking adjustment for recline, with common positions including 90ยฐ (upright for office work), 100ยฐ (slight recline), 125ยฐ (semi-reclined for rest), and even 155ยฐ (nearly flat). Users can lock the chair back at the desired angle by flipping a lever at the bottom of the chair or rotating a specific mechanism, preventing accidental sliding during use. This function is particularly suitable for scenarios requiring prolonged sitting posture changes, such as lunch breaks or meetings.

Common Misuses and Safety Precautions

  1. Avoid stepping on the swivel column: The gas spring is designed to withstand only vertical pressure. Using it as a footrest can deform the internal structure or cause gas leakage, leading to sudden chair descent or explosion risks.
  2. Do not apply lubricants: Lubricants like WD-40 may corrode the seals of the gas spring, causing gas leakage or adjustment failure. If cleaning is needed, simply wipe with a dry cloth.
  3. Regularly check for safety: For gas springs that have been in use for over 5 years or chairs showing signs of air leakage or unusual noises, it is recommended to replace the components to avoid safety hazards caused by aging.

By properly utilizing the functions of the swivel column and avoiding improper operations, the comfort and safety of the office chair can be significantly enhanced.
