Office Chair Swaying Left and Right
The left-and-right swaying of an office chair may be caused by loose screws, issues with the gas lift rod, deformation or wear of the base or components, wear of the nylon slide or plastic buckles, worn wheels or uneven floor surfaces, or differences in product quality, and requires targeted solutions.

Loose screws: After long-term use, the screws connecting the seat cushion to the tray and the tray to the five-star base may become loosely detached, causing swaying. Solution: Use a screwdriver or wrench to loosen the loose screws counterclockwise, spray a small amount of WD40 around the screw holes for lubrication and rust removal, and then tighten them clockwise. If the screw holes become enlarged due to wear, use a toothpick or thin wooden stick dipped in white glue to fill the holes, and reinsert the screws after the glue dries.
Gas lift rod issues:
- Wear or air leakage: If the chair stutters or has difficulty moving up and down when rotated, it may be due to wear of the gas lift rod or base components. Solution: Replace the gas lift rod (costing about 19 yuan). First, spray WD40 on the connection points, let it sit for 1 minute, then use a hairdryer on the hot air setting to heat the metal parts. Use a heavy-duty pipe wrench to rotate and pull out the old rod counterclockwise, clean the base mounting hole, insert the new rod, and tap it firmly into place.
- Loose connections: Wear of the metal clips or plastic sleeves at the interface between the gas lift rod and the tray can lead to unstable connections. Solution: If accompanied by lifting failure or slow sinking, replace the worn metal clips or plastic sleeves; if the gas lift rod is leaking internally, replace the entire rod.
Base deformation or component wear: Open the bottom cover to check if the plastic buckles are brittle and broken or if the wheel axles are misaligned. Solution: Use pliers to reposition loose buckles; if the plastic parts are shattered or the wheels are severely misaligned, replace the base components of the same model.
Wear of nylon slide or plastic buckles: The nylon slide or fixed plastic buckles inside the tray that control the tilt angle may wear out after long-term friction, causing increased clearance. Solution: Purchase corresponding replacement parts online or contact the manufacturer for replacement.
Worn wheels or uneven floor surfaces: Severely worn wheels or uneven floor surfaces can cause the chair to sway. Solution: Replace the worn wheels or place the chair on a flat surface.
Product quality differences: Low-end products may have unstable quality due to production process or material reductions. Solution: If the swaying problem persists and cannot be repaired, it is recommended to replace the office chair with a more reliable one.
