Office Chair Swaying

Admin October 09, 2026

The reasons for an office chair swaying mainly fall into three categories: design features, structural characteristics, and component failures, as detailed below:

Some ergonomic chairs are designed with a rocking function to meet users' needs for rest after prolonged sitting. This feature allows the chair to sway slightly, enabling users to relax more during breaks and alleviate physical fatigue. Such swaying is a normal phenomenon within the design scope and does not affect the chair's usability or safety.

Office chairs are typically assembled from multiple components, and there are gaps at the screw connections between these components. Moreover, many office chairs have height-adjustment and reclining functions, and to ensure the flexibility of these functions, the gaps cannot be completely sealed. This results in a certain degree of swaying during normal use. Such swaying is usually minor and does not affect the overall stability and user experience of the chair, being a normal phenomenon.

If the swaying of an office chair is noticeable, it may indicate a component failure. The most common cause is loose fixing screws between the backrest and the base. Over prolonged use, screws may gradually loosen due to vibrations and friction, leading to unstable connections between chair components and resulting in swaying. In this case, simply using the appropriate tools to tighten the screws can resolve the swaying issue. Additionally, if the seat tilts forward, it is necessary to check whether the base is installed incorrectly. Incorrect base installation can cause the chair's center of gravity to shift, affecting its balance and stability, and leading to forward tilting and swaying. If the base is found to be installed incorrectly, simply reinstalling it correctly will restore normal function.
