Office Chair Sway

Admin October 09, 2026

Office chair sway may be caused by aging of the gas lift, loose screws in the chassis, worn wheel hubs, deformed cushion connectors, or loose backrest structures, and requires targeted handling based on the specific cause.

I. Common Causes and Solutions

  1. Aging of the Gas Lift
A decrease in the sealing of the gas lift can lead to unstable air pressure, causing slight swaying. Solution: Replace it with a new gas lift of the appropriate model and avoid using inferior accessories. If replacement is not possible temporarily, rotate the adjustment knob of the gas lift counterclockwise (after removing the dust cover at the bottom of the seat), test the rebound resistance in stages of 30ยฐ to gradually increase the support force.

  2. Loose Screws in the Chassis
The screws at the connection between the five-claw base and the chair legs may become loose due to frequent movement. Solution: Use an Allen wrench to tighten all visible connectors. It is recommended to check them once a month. If the screws are stripped, replace them with stainless steel screws and apply thread-locking compound to enhance stability.

  3. Worn Wheel Hubs
Long-term friction of the universal wheels against the ground can create gaps, forming unstable fulcrums. Solution: Clean debris from the wheel axles or replace the entire set of universal wheels directly. It is recommended to choose soft and quiet wheels, which are more wear-resistant and can reduce swaying caused by uneven ground.

  4. Deformed Cushion Connectors
The pressure from body weight may gradually deform the metal connectors, creating movement space. Solution: If the deformation is slight, gently tap it back into place with a hammer; if the deformation is severe, replace the cushion base or the entire chair frame. For chairs that have been used for more than 3 years, it is recommended to comprehensively evaluate the structural safety.

II. Special Handling for Loose Backrests

  1. Loose Adjustment Rod Screws
Use a cross-head screwdriver to rotate the plastic cover at the base connection counterclockwise, expose the metal fixing frame, and then use a wrench to tighten the 6-8 fixing screws one by one to ensure a firm connection between the backrest and the base.

  2. Failed Spring Locking
Find the spring bolt at the bottom of the backrest and use pointed-nose pliers to re-insert the slipped spring hook into the slot; if the spring is deformed, you can purchase a replacement spring with a diameter of 3-5mm online (measure the original length before purchasing) to avoid backrest swaying due to insufficient spring elasticity.

III. Emergency Reinforcement Techniques

If professional tools are not available, temporary measures can be taken:

  • Cut a bicycle inner tube into 3cm-wide strips and wrap them around the joint between the backrest and the base to increase friction;
  • Use rubber bands to tie the movable joints of the gas lift to limit the swaying amplitude.
Note: Such operations can only maintain stability for 3-7 days, and professional repairs should be carried out as soon as possible.
