Office Chair Surface Modeling

Admin October 09, 2026

The following steps can be followed for office chair surface modeling using SolidWorks:

1. Draw the Metal Frame
First, create a new part file in SolidWorks. Select the Front Plane as the sketch plane and draw the 3D sketch path of the chair, which should include the curved profile and key turning points of the frame. Next, draw a 2D sketch cross-section on the Right Plane. The cross-section is usually circular or elliptical, used to define the cross-sectional dimensions of the frame. After completing the sketches, use the 'Sweep' feature, with the 3D path as the guide curve and the 2D cross-section as the profile, to generate half of the frame solid. Add cylindrical structures at the ends of the frame (such as the parts connecting to the chair legs) using the 'Extruded Boss' feature; the middle connecting rods can be created by drawing new sketches and extruding them. Finally, use the 'Mirror' feature to mirror and generate the complete metal frame based on the central plane of the chair.

2. Create the Seat Cushion and Backrest
For the surface modeling of the seat cushion and backrest, first define the profile lines. In SolidWorks, select the Front Plane to draw four sketch lines, including the top, bottom, left, and right profile lines. It is recommended to use spline curves for a more natural surface transition. Ensure that the starting and ending points of the profile lines are aligned to form a closed profile area. After completing the sketches, use the 'Lofted Surface' feature, selecting the four profile lines in sequence to generate half of the seat cushion or backrest surface. Use the 'Mirror Surface' feature to generate the complete surface model. To give the seat cushion and backrest solid thickness, use the 'Thicken' feature and input an appropriate thickness value (such as 50mm). Finally, use the 'Fillet' feature to chamfer the edges of the seat cushion and backrest, enhancing the realism and comfort of the model.

3. Add Other Accessories
The modeling of chair legs and armrests can be done using appropriate methods based on actual needs. For example, chair legs can be drawn as 2D sketches of pentagons or stars, extruded into solids, and then have their edges treated with the 'Fillet' feature; armrests can be generated using the 'Sweep' or 'Lofted Surface' features. For detailed features of the seat cushion (such as dents), first copy the surface of the seat cushion (using the 'Offset Surface' feature), then adjust the shape using 'Offset Surface' or 'Trim Surface', and finally generate a solid using the 'Thicken' feature. The depth and shape of the dents can be controlled through sketches or by directly editing the surface parameters. Additionally, details such as fillets and chamfers should be added to enhance the overall texture of the model. After completing the modeling of all accessories, use the 'Combine' feature to merge all parts into a complete office chair model.
