Office Chair Support Rod Removal

Admin October 14, 2026

You can refer to the following steps for removing the support rod of an office chair:

I. Preparation

Prepare tools such as a rubber mallet or wooden mallet, WD - 40 or lubricant, a towel or soft cloth, gloves, a flat-head screwdriver, a wrench, a flat-blade screwdriver, and pliers. These tools will play different roles in various steps. For example, the rubber mallet is used for tapping, the lubricant is used to solve rust problems, and the screwdrivers and wrench are used to remove screws and nuts.

II. Specific Operation Steps

  1. Invert the chair: Turn the computer chair upside down on the ground, ensuring that the gas rod is facing upwards. Place a thick towel under the chair to prevent the support frame from directly contacting the ground and causing wear.
  2. Handle the snap fasteners or spring clips: Observe whether there are plastic snap fasteners or metal spring clips between the support frame and the gas rod. If so, use a flat-head screwdriver to gently pry them open, and then try to pull off the support frame.
  3. Tap the joints: If there are no snap fasteners and the frame is fixed by friction, you can gently tap the joints of the support frame with a rubber mallet. You can tap evenly around the frame, or try continuous tapping in multiple batches, and tap hard for the last few times.
  4. Shake the support frame: If it still cannot be pulled off after tapping, try shaking the support frame left and right to break the adhesion caused by rust or dust accumulation between the gas rod and the support frame due to long-term use.
  5. Use lubricant: If the support frame still does not move at all, spray a little WD - 40 or a similar lubricant, wait for 10 - 15 minutes, and then try again. If the gas rod is completely rusted, you can spray the lubricant and leave it overnight before trying again.
  6. Other removal methods: Prepare tools such as a wrench, a flat-blade screwdriver, and pliers. Invert the computer chair, use a wrench to turn the screws and nuts on the base to remove the base, use pliers to grip the gas rod, and use a flat-blade screwdriver to turn the flat-blade nut on the gas rod to remove the gas rod. If the connection between the gas rod and the base is too tight, you can use a rubber mallet to tap along the bottom steel ring of the gas rod until the gas rod separates from the base.

III. Precautions

  1. Avoid violent removal. Hard pulling may cause deformation of the gas rod or support frame, and even hurt your hands.
  2. Wear protective gloves. The metal edges may be sharp, so be careful during operation.
  3. Ensure a well-ventilated environment. If you use a lubricant, try to operate in a well-ventilated place to avoid inhaling harmful gases.
