Office Chair Support Broken

Admin October 16, 2026

When the support of an office chair is broken, targeted handling is required according to the specific damaged component. The following are common damaged components and their handling methods:

Base Damage

If the base shows obvious wobbling when sitting on it, makes strange noises, is deformed or cracked, has loose screws, or causes the entire piece of furniture to tilt, the base needs to be replaced.

  • Judgment: Determine whether the base needs to be replaced based on the above-mentioned situations.
  • Prepare tools and a new base: The tools include a Phillips/flat-head screwdriver, a wrench (selected according to the screw type of the old base), a tape measure, and a marker pen (for marking positions). For the new base, measure its size to ensure that its diameter, hole spacing, and height are the same as those of the old one. In terms of material, plastic bases are suitable for lightweight furniture, while metal (such as cast iron and aluminum alloy) bases are more durable and have a stronger load-bearing capacity.
  • Replacement operation:
    • Remove the old base: Turn the chair upside down, use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws fixing the base, and keep the screws. If it is a snap-fit base, gently pry it open.
    • Clean the installation surface: After removing the old base, use a cloth to wipe off the dust and residual glue marks on the bottom of the furniture.
    • Install the new base: Align it with the original screw holes, place the new base, and screw on the screws (do not apply too much force to prevent cracking). After installation, gently shake it to test. It is stable if there is no wobbling.
  • Tips to avoid problems:
    • Safety first: Ensure that the furniture is placed steadily before installation and do not operate while it is suspended. For heavy furniture (such as sofas), it is best to ask someone to help hold it.
    • Size matching: The hole spacing and height of the new base must be the same as those of the old one; otherwise, it may be crooked after installation.
    • Test the load-bearing capacity: After installation, gently shake it with your hands or sit on it 2 - 3 times to confirm that there is no wobbling or strange noises before using it with confidence.

Spring Base Damage

If the spring base of an office chair has a problem, causing it to be unable to return to its original position when leaning back, this is not a problem with the spring itself but rather damage to the fixing point of the spring. Usually, additional welding points need to be added to the spring base to enhance its stability, and the chair can be taken to a welding shop for repair.

Backrest Support Problems

  • Snap-fit damage: The backrest is usually connected to the seat through snap-fits. If the plastic part of the snap-fit is broken or the metal part is deformed, the backrest may not be able to be held in place, and a new snap-fit needs to be replaced.
  • Support rod problems: If the backrest support rod is bent or damaged, it will affect the normal locking position of the backrest. You can try to gently straighten the support rod to restore its original shape. If it cannot be straightened, the support rod needs to be replaced.
  • Seat frame problems: If the seat frame is deformed, the backrest may not be able to be held in place, and the frame needs to be repaired or reinforced.
