Suitable Height for Office Chairs

Admin October 11, 2026

The standard range for the suitable height of office chairs is typically 40-50 centimeters, with a recommended seat height of 40-45 centimeters for ordinary adults. Specific adjustments should be made in combination with ergonomic principles and actual usage scenarios, as detailed below:

1. Basic Height Standards
According to ergonomic requirements, the seat height of an office chair should match the height of the user's calf pit (the height of the fibular head). The specific calculation method is: calf pit height + heel thickness - 10-20mm allowance for movement. For example, if the calf pit height is 450mm and the heel thickness is 20mm, the chair height should be set to 450+20-15=455mm (taking the middle value). For soft seats, due to compressibility, the maximum height should be strictly controlled not to exceed 460mm, while for hard seats, the recommended height range is 400-440mm to avoid compressing the thigh nerves or affecting blood circulation.

2. Dynamic Adjustment Principles
In actual use, two core conditions must be met:

  • Feet Flat on the Ground: When sitting, the soles of the feet should be in full contact with the ground to avoid leg muscle fatigue caused by suspension. If the chair is too high, the feet can be elevated or a chair with a footrest can be chosen.
  • Optimized Leg Angle: The thighs and calves should maintain a 90ยฐ-100ยฐ vertical or slightly reclined angle, with about 5 centimeters of space behind the knees to ensure that the thickness of a palm can easily fit under the thighs. This design can disperse the pressure on the ischial bones and reduce the burden on the lumbar spine.

3. Height Adjustability
Prioritize choosing office chairs with an adjustment range of 38-48 centimeters to accommodate people of different heights (such as those in the 150-190cm height range). When adjusting, note the following:

  • For shorter individuals (such as those 150-165cm tall), it is recommended to adjust the chair height to 38-42 centimeters and use it with a lower desk;
  • For taller individuals (such as those 175-190cm tall), the chair height can be adjusted to 44-48 centimeters to avoid bending over to operate the keyboard.

4. Adaptation to Special Scenarios
If working at a desk for long periods, the chair height can be fine-tuned in combination with the desk height: when the elbows are naturally hanging down, the forearms should be parallel to the desk. If the desk height is fixed (such as 75cm), the chair height needs to be adjusted accordingly to ensure that the height difference between the elbows and the desk does not exceed 5cm, maintaining a relaxed shoulder and neck posture.

Summary: The height of an office chair should be based on the "calf pit height + heel thickness" and combined with dynamic adjustments and scenario adaptations. Prioritize choosing models with an adjustable range of 38-48 centimeters and verify compliance with ergonomic standards through three checks: feet on the ground, leg angle, and elbow height.
