Why Does the Office Chair Suddenly Rise and How to Solve It

Admin October 16, 2026

The reasons for the sudden rise of an office chair and the corresponding solutions are as follows:

I. Core Cause Analysis

  1. Gas Spring Failure Wear and aging of the gas spring's sealing ring, entry of impurities inside, or insufficient purity of nitrogen can lead to chronic air leakage or abnormal pressure increase. When the seal fails, the combined effect of wear on the cylinder's inner wall and aging of the sealing ring may cause slow nitrogen leakage or a sudden pressure increase, causing the chair to automatically rise to its highest point. Low-quality gas springs pose a risk of explosion and should be prioritized for inspection.
  2. Control Lever Issues Prolonged sitting may cause the body to press against the control lever on the side of the chair, or a malfunctioning spring in the lever may get stuck in the "up" position, continuously releasing pressure from the gas rod. Some chairs with gravity sensors may misjudge weight changes and trigger automatic lifting if the sensor module fails.
  3. Mechanical Structure Wear Wear on the lifting guide rails or wheels can cause uneven friction, or loose connecting bolts between the chassis and the gas rod can imbalance the thrust of the gas rod, leading to abnormal lifting. Additionally, damage to the oil seal of the lifting column may also cause pressure leakage.
  4. Gas Valve Failure A stuck valve core or a broken spring in the gas valve at the top of the gas rod can cause uncontrolled nitrogen intake and exhaust, resulting in a "constantly open" state and causing the chair to continuously rise.
  5. Other Reasons Rust on the chair's bearings or loose screws may cause spontaneous lifting due to changes in friction or structural instability.

II. Targeted Solutions

  1. Gas Spring Failure Handling Replace the gas rod with a qualified one (costing around a few dozen yuan), prioritizing brands that support a weight capacity of over 120 kg and have a good reputation. When replacing it yourself, ensure the model matches; if the operation is difficult, it is advisable to contact professional maintenance personnel or the manufacturer to replace it with original parts. Never use low-quality gas springs to avoid the risk of explosion.
  2. Control Lever Issue Repair Check if the control lever is being pressed by the seat cushion or clothing, and manually reset it to the "locked" position for testing. If the problem persists, further inspect the gravity sensor module (if applicable).
  3. Mechanical Structure Maintenance Tighten the connecting bolts between the gas rod and the base, and between the lifting column and the base. Check if the oil seal of the lifting column is damaged and replace it promptly. Lubricate or replace worn guide rails or wheels.
  4. Gas Valve Failure Repair Professional personnel are required to disassemble the gas rod and replace the faulty gas valve or valve core spring. Non-professionals are not advised to perform this operation themselves.
  5. Other Issue Handling If the bearings are rusty, apply lubricating oil to the rotating shaft; if the screws are loose, tighten them with a wrench.

III. Safety Warnings When dealing with issues related to lifting chairs, always check the quality of the gas spring first. If the gas rod's wall is too thin, has scratches, or has been in use for more than 5 years, it is recommended to replace it immediately. Avoid using it in high-temperature environments or under long-term overload (such as a weight capacity far exceeding the design standard) to reduce the risk of explosion.
