Sudden Explosion of Office Chairs

Admin October 12, 2026

The sudden explosion of office chairs mainly involves pneumatic lifting chairs, with core causes including issues with the pneumatic rod, the use of inferior products, and improper operation, necessitating risk prevention through standardized purchasing and usage.

Pneumatic rods are the core components of pneumatic lifting chairs, and their explosion risk is directly related to the quality of the internally filled gas and the container. Pneumatic rods are typically filled with nitrogen, utilizing pressure differences to achieve lifting and lowering functions. If the purity of the nitrogen is insufficient and it is mixed with oxygen or other substances, oxidation reactions or gas expansion may occur under high-temperature conditions (such as direct sunlight or prolonged use) or frequent friction (such as rapid lifting and lowering), leading to explosions. Additionally, the material and thickness of the pneumatic rod's container wall are crucial. If the tube wall is too thin or made of inferior materials (such as low-quality steel), it may not withstand internal pressure, directly causing rupture.

The manufacturing process and material selection of inferior products are another primary cause of explosions. Some merchants, in an attempt to reduce costs, use compressed air instead of nitrogen to fill pneumatic rods. Compressed air contains approximately 21% oxygen, which is prone to oxidation reactions with internal lubricants or impurities, generating heat and accelerating gas expansion, significantly increasing the risk of explosion. Furthermore, the tube wall thickness of inferior pneumatic rods may be less than 1 millimeter, far below the safety standard (usually requiring โ‰ฅ2 millimeters), and they may not be equipped with explosion-proof steel plates (used to disperse impact forces). According to a spot check by the State Administration for Market Regulation, the non-compliance rate of office chairs reached 23.3% in 2020, with 17 batches of swivel chairs deemed non-compliant due to inadequate high- and low-temperature resistance of the pneumatic rods or the absence of explosion-proof steel plates.

Preventive measures should be taken from both purchasing and usage perspectives. When purchasing, prioritize products from reputable manufacturers, with a recommended price of no less than 200 yuan, avoiding low-priced products without brands or unclear sources. Check the smoothness of the pneumatic rod's lifting and lowering, ensuring that explosion-proof steel plates with a thickness of โ‰ฅ2 millimeters are installed between the seat cushion and the pneumatic rod, which can be confirmed by gently shaking the chair or checking the product manual. Avoid frequent lifting and lowering of the chair during use to reduce friction and temperature increase; if the chair makes unusual noises, experiences lifting and lowering stuttering, or leaks gas, stop using it immediately and contact after-sales service. Additionally, when not in use for an extended period, it is advisable to adjust the chair to its lowest position to reduce internal pressure in the pneumatic rod.
