Sudden Drop of Office Chair

Admin October 13, 2026

The most common and core reason for the sudden drop of an office chair is the aging or poor sealing of the gas lift, leading to the leakage of high-pressure nitrogen inside or the wear of the oil seal.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Listen for Sounds

    • Sit on the chair or press the seat with your hand and observe the descent process: If it is a slow and cushioned descent, it may be normal exhaust; if it drops directly and quickly, accompanied by a hissing sound of air leakage, it indicates that the gas lift is leaking.
    • The hissing sound is a typical sign of the gas lift's sealing failure, and use should be stopped immediately.
  2. Inspect the Appearance

    • Remove the seat base plate (usually fixed with screws) and check for oil stains at the connections between the gas lift, the five-star base, and the seat.
    • Oil stains are direct evidence of seal wear or internal oil leakage in the gas lift, and further confirmation is needed to determine if parts need to be replaced.
  3. Test the Operation

    • Repeatedly operate the lift control lever or button to check for any stuttering, abnormal resistance, or complete failure to trigger the lift.
    • If the adjustment valve is stuck by foreign objects or the internal mechanism is damaged, it may cause the lift function to fail, requiring cleaning of foreign objects or lubrication.

Other Possible Causes

  • Loose Screws: Check all adjustment screws at the bottom of the chair and the fixing screws at both ends of the gas lift for looseness, and tighten them to restore stability.
  • Overweight Use: If the user's weight consistently exceeds the chair's safe weight capacity (usually 120 kg), it may trigger a protection mechanism causing slow exhaust and descent.

Solutions

  • Loose Screws: Simply tighten the loose screws.
  • Stuck Adjustment Valve: Clean foreign objects and apply a small amount of grease to restore the lift function.
  • Gas Lift Leakage or Damaged Adjustment Valve: Parts need to be replaced. If the chair is under warranty, contact the brand's official customer service for free repair or replacement; if the warranty has expired, consult for paid repair or purchase original parts, or replace a qualified gas lift yourself (costing about a few dozen yuan).
    • Notes for Self-Replacement: The gas lift is a one-time sealed component and cannot be repaired, only replaced as a whole. When operating, wear safety goggles, ensure the chair is at its lowest height, place it sideways on a stable surface, and pad soft objects underneath to prevent accidental ejection.
  • Complex Situations: For electric lift chairs or complex structures with unidentifiable issues, it is recommended to seek help from professional repair personnel to avoid safety hazards caused by improper operation.
