Office Chair Submerged in Water
Admin October 08, 2026
After an office chair is submerged in water, follow these steps to handle it and prevent subsequent issues:

I. Emergency Water Removal
- Remove surface water: Immediately wipe the surface of the office chair with a highly absorbent dry cloth, paper towel, or towel to prevent further water penetration. If the chair material allows, use a hairdryer on a low-temperature setting or a dehydrator to assist in drying, but be mindful of temperature control to prevent high-temperature damage to the material.
- Handle internal moisture: If water has seeped into the interior of the chair (such as the sponge filling layer), disassemble the fabric or shell of the seat and backrest to expose the affected parts. After absorbing residual moisture with a dry cloth, place the disassembled parts in a well-ventilated area to dry naturally. Do not expose them to direct sunlight or high-temperature baking to prevent material deformation or cracking.
II. Thorough Cleaning and Disinfection
- Surface cleaning: Select a neutral or mildly alkaline bactericidal disinfectant cleaner (such as diluted 84 disinfectant, with a concentration that meets safety standards) to wipe the surface of the chair and detachable fabrics. If the chair is made of leather or mesh fabric, test the cleaner on an inconspicuous area first to ensure it does not cause fading or damage.
- Internal treatment: If the internal filling of the chair is affected by moisture and mold, completely disassemble it for cleaning. The sponge can be soaked in a low-concentration disinfectant solution, wrung out, and air-dried. The wooden or metal frame should be wiped with a dry cloth to ensure no moisture remains.
- Environmental disinfection: If the office chair has been soaked in floodwater, disinfect the surrounding environment simultaneously. Wipe floors and walls with a 500 mg/L chlorine-containing disinfectant, let it sit for 10 minutes, and then wipe clean with water. For large areas of mold, remove the mold before disinfecting to prevent secondary contamination of the chair.
III. Repair Deformation Issues
- Physical correction: If the chair deforms due to water absorption, use clamps and dry towels to fix both sides of the deformed area and straighten it to restore its shape. Alternatively, apply a hot towel to the deformed area (with the temperature controlled between 50-60ยฐC) to soften the material and manually adjust it, then let it cool and set.
- Professional repair: If the deformation is severe or involves structural damage (such as rusted metal brackets or cracked wooden frames), it is recommended to contact a professional repair technician to handle it, avoiding further damage caused by self-operation.
IV. Preventive Measures
- Daily protection: Place wool foot mats or waterproof seat cushions on the chair to reduce the risk of direct contact with water stains. Avoid using the chair in humid environments (such as near windows or bathrooms) for extended periods.
- Material selection: When purchasing an office chair, prioritize materials with good water resistance (such as PU leather, waterproof mesh fabric) or designs that allow for easy disassembly and cleaning for easier maintenance.
- Regular inspection: During the rainy season or humid periods, regularly inspect the bottom and seams of the chair to promptly remove accumulated water or dust and maintain a dry environment.
