Office Chair Subdivision Modeling

Admin October 19, 2026

Office chair subdivision modeling can be implemented in different ways across various software, and it is necessary to choose an appropriate method based on the software's characteristics.

3ds Max: Taking the Pinnacle office chair as an example, before modeling, it is necessary to uniformly set the system units to millimeters and import the front, side, and top views as references. It is recommended to use the side view as the primary reference and the front view as a secondary reference for placement to ensure accurate proportions. During modeling, the office chair should be divided into independent components such as the backrest, seat cushion, armrests, and legs. Each component should be modeled separately and then combined into a whole using the 'Attach' command. After constructing the low-poly framework, structural lines should be added through the 'Connect' operation, and the 'Chamfer' technique should be used to maintain the sharp edges of hard-edged areas. Then, the 'TurboSmooth' modifier should be applied for subdivision smoothing. For symmetrical components, the 'Symmetry' modifier can be used to achieve mirror modeling, improving efficiency.

C4D: Although the specific subdivision modeling process is not clearly defined, its core modeling logic is consistent with other software. Attention should be paid to the rationality of edge distribution, avoiding the occurrence of pentagons or poles. Basic shapes can be constructed using fundamental tools such as 'Extrude', 'Rotate', and 'Loft', and then smoothed using the 'Subdivision Surface' modifier. For furniture modeling, special attention should be paid to the natural transition at structural joints, and local subdivision intensity can be adjusted using 'Weight' or 'Subdivision Weight'.

SketchUp: Due to the software's limitations in handling complex curved surfaces, a multi-software collaborative process is recommended. First, draw the basic outline based on the three views and use the 'Push/Pull' tool to generate the low-poly model. Then, adjust the vertex positions using 'Vertex Tools' to optimize the shape and convert triangular faces to quadrilateral faces using 'QuadFace Tools' to improve subdivision quality. Finally, use the 'SubD' plugin for subdivision smoothing, paying attention to controlling the subdivision level to avoid an overly heavy model. For irregular components, the high-poly model can be first completed in 3ds Max or C4D and then imported into SketchUp for simplification.

Key Commonalities: Regardless of the software used, subdivision modeling should follow the core process of 'low-poly - adding edges - chamfering - smoothing'. Additionally, uniform edge distribution should be maintained to avoid local over-subdivision causing model deformation. For functional furniture like office chairs, special consideration should be given to structural rationality, such as the load-bearing capacity of the legs and the range of motion of the swivel joints.
