Office Chair Style Classification
Admin October 11, 2026
Common styles of office chairs can be classified based on backrest height, surface material, chair leg structure, and usage scenarios, as detailed below:

Classification by Backrest Height
- High-back Chair: The backrest extends to the head and neck, providing comprehensive support from the waist to the cervical spine. It is suitable for executives or designers who need to work at a desk for long periods. Its design reduces neck fatigue but occupies more space, typically used in private offices.
- Mid-back Chair: The backrest height reaches the shoulder level, balancing support and spatial flexibility. It is a common choice for regular employee workstations. Its structure balances comfort and cost, suitable for daily office scenarios.
- Low-back Chair: The backrest covers only the waist area, facilitating easy movement and storage. It is often used in conference rooms, training rooms, or temporary workstations. Its lightweight design is suitable for short-term use but lacks neck support.
Classification by Surface Material
- Mesh Chair: The backrest and seat cushion are made of elastic mesh material, offering excellent breathability and effectively reducing heat buildup, especially suitable for summer or prolonged sitting scenarios. Its drawback is that the elasticity may decrease over time.
- Leather Chair: With genuine or faux leather as the surface material, it has a premium appearance and is easy to clean, commonly found in executive chairs or reception areas. Genuine leather chairs are durable but more expensive, while faux leather chairs offer better cost-effectiveness but require attention to prevent cracking.
- Fabric Chair: The surface is made of fabric material, offering a wide range of color and pattern options. It provides a warm and soft sitting experience, suitable for creative office environments. However, it requires regular vacuuming and has weaker stain resistance.
Classification by Chair Leg Structure
- Bow Chair: The chair legs are made of a single curved steel tube, offering a simple and sturdy structure. However, it cannot rotate or adjust in height, often used in conference rooms or negotiation areas, emphasizing functionality and cost-effectiveness.
- Four-legged Chair: With a traditional design of four straight legs, it offers strong stability but low flexibility, usually at a fixed height, suitable for training classrooms or fixed workstations.
- Swivel Chair: Equipped with casters and a gas lift at the bottom, it supports free rotation and height adjustment, being the mainstream choice in modern office scenarios. Its flexibility enhances work efficiency, but the safety of the gas lift requires regular inspection.
Classification by Usage Scenario
- Executive Chair: Characterized by a high backrest, wide seat, and leather material, it is equipped with adjustable armrests and a reclining function, emphasizing presence and comfort. It is typically used in executive offices or reception areas.
- Staff Chair: Focusing on practicality and cost-effectiveness, it mainly features adjustable mid-back mesh chairs to meet daily office needs while controlling procurement costs.
- Visitor Chair: Designed to be low and lightweight, it facilitates easy access for visitors and does not emphasize long-term comfort. It is often used in office reception areas or public spaces.
