Office Chair Stuck

Admin October 17, 2026

When an office chair gets stuck, you first need to accurately identify the type and location of the jam, and then solve it accordingly. Here are some common situations and solutions:

Caster/Wheel Stuck

  • Cause: Long-term entanglement and accumulation of hair, yarn, or dust on the floor.
  • Solution Steps:
    • Remove the Casters: Use two large flat-head screwdrivers. Insert them from both sides of the caster wheel near the axle, and pry evenly to the sides to make the snap ring pop out. Or, turn the chair upside down, hold the wheel bracket with your hand, and gently pull it outwards (most are snap-on designs and do not require tools). If it is tightly stuck, you can use a screwdriver with a soft cloth to pry the edge of the snap ring.
    • Clean Foreign Objects: Pull out the caster along with the axle (if it is tight, you can tap it lightly with a small hammer for assistance), and clean the hair and fibers on the axle and wheel. Take out the wheels one by one for inspection. Use tweezers to pick out the hair in the gaps, use an old toothbrush dipped in neutral detergent to brush the surface and bearing gaps, rinse with clean water (avoid getting water into the bearings), dry with a dry cloth, and air-dry for 10 minutes.
    • Reinstall and Test: After cleaning, reinstall the casters and ensure the snap ring is in place. After the wheels are dry, drop 1 - 2 drops of special lubricating oil for office equipment at the bearings, rotate to distribute the oil evenly, align with the bracket snap ring, and push it in until you hear a 'click' sound. Turn the chair over and test if it moves smoothly.

Lifting Function Failure

  • Cause: The locking mechanism is accidentally locked, the internal sealing ring of the gas lift is worn, nitrogen leakage or damage, or air leakage in the lifting cylinder, etc.
  • Solution Steps:
    • Check the Locking Mechanism: Look at the adjustment handle or knob at the bottom of the chair and try to loosen it.
    • Determine Gas Lift Failure: If the gas lift cannot be raised or lowered or sinks slowly due to a worn sealing ring, nitrogen leakage, etc., it needs to be replaced as a whole.
    • Handle Cylinder Air Leakage: When the chair cannot be lowered, drop one or two drops of engine oil around the vent button at the top of the cylinder to enhance the sealing performance.
    • Operation Precautions: It is best to raise the chair without anyone sitting on it, and when lowering it, someone needs to sit on it to provide weight.

Inflexible Rotation or Abnormal Noise

If the chair rotates stiffly or makes noise, it is mostly due to a lack of lubrication in the turntable track under the chassis, and dry friction between metal parts. You can apply an appropriate amount of silicone-based grease or white lithium-based grease and rotate the seat repeatedly to distribute it evenly. Avoid using oily lubricants that are prone to attracting dust.

Backrest Stuck

If the chair backrest cannot recline, check the operating lever. Pulling it outwards is the unlocked state.
