Office Chair Stuck

Admin October 08, 2026

When an office chair gets stuck, it should be addressed based on the specific type and location of the blockage. Here are common situations and solutions:

Reclining Blockage: If the reclining function of the office chair is locked, it is usually because the operating lever is in the locked position. At this time, check the operating lever under or on the side of the chair, pull it outward to put the lever in the unlocked position, and the reclining function can be restored.

Height Adjustment Stuttering/Noise: If there is a creaking sound or even blockage when adjusting the height, the gas lift itself should not be lubricated. Focus on the metal friction surface at the connection between the base and the gas lift. If the pneumatic height-adjustable chair cannot adjust its height, first check the adjusting handle or knob (locking mechanism) at the bottom of the chair and try to loosen it. If the internal seal of the gas lift is worn, nitrogen leaks, or is damaged, the entire gas lift needs to be replaced. If the chair cannot be lowered, it may be due to air leakage in the lift cylinder. You can try dripping one or two drops of engine oil around the air release button at the top of the cylinder to enhance the seal. It is best to have the chair empty when raising it and have someone sit on it to provide weight when lowering it.

Inflexible Rotation: If you need to exert force or even hear a friction sound when rotating the seat, you can apply white lithium grease (recommended viscosity grade NLGI 2) to the turntable track of the chassis. If the chair makes a dry sound or noise when rotating, it is mostly due to a lack of lubrication on the turntable track under the chassis, resulting in dry friction between metal parts. Apply an appropriate amount of silicone-based grease or white lithium grease, and then rotate the seat repeatedly to distribute it evenly. Avoid using oily lubricants that easily attract dust.

Poor Rolling of Casters: Apply grease to the wheel axles with a cotton swab every year (be sure to clear away tangled hair first). If the caster/roller is stuck, first flip the chair over, remove the caster, and use two large flat-head screwdrivers. Insert them from both sides of the caster wheel as close to the axle as possible, and pry evenly to both sides to make the retaining clip of the fixed caster exit. Clear all hair and fibers wrapped around the axle and wheel. After cleaning, reinstall the caster, ensure the retaining clip is fully engaged in its original position, and flip the chair over for testing.

Backrest Rebound Failure: The plastic gear set of the synchronous backrest needs to use food-grade grease (avoid contact with clothing).

When encountering a stuck chair, first stay calm and avoid using brute force to pull or pry hard, as this can easily cause permanent damage to components or pose safety hazards. First accurately locate the type and location of the blockage, and then take targeted measures.
