Office Chair Structure Classification

Admin October 11, 2026

Office chairs can be classified from multiple dimensions in terms of structure, as follows:

Classification by Backrest Height

  • High-back Chair: The backrest extends to the head and neck, providing comprehensive support for the entire back and neck. It is suitable for executive offices or individuals who need to work at a desk for long periods.
  • Mid-back Chair: The backrest reaches shoulder level, balancing support and a sense of space. It is the most common type for ordinary employee workstations.
  • Low-back Chair: The backrest covers only the waist area, facilitating easy movement and storage. It is often used in conference rooms, training rooms, or temporary workstations.

Classification by Surface Material

  • Mesh Chair: The backrest and seat cushion are made of elastic mesh material, offering excellent breathability and preventing sweating in summer. It is suitable for prolonged sitting scenarios.
  • Leather Chair: It has a high-end appearance and is easy to clean, commonly found in boss chairs or reception areas. It is important to distinguish between genuine leather and faux leather in terms of durability.
  • Fabric Chair: It offers a wide range of color and pattern options, providing a warm and comfortable sitting experience. However, it requires regular vacuuming to prevent dust accumulation.

Classification by Chair Leg Structure

  • Bow Chair: The chair legs are made of a single curved steel tube, providing a simple and stable structure. However, it cannot rotate or adjust in height and is often used in conference rooms or negotiation areas.
  • Four-legged Chair: It features a traditional four-legged design, offering strong stability but lacking flexibility. It usually does not have a rotating function and is suitable for fixed scenarios such as training classrooms.
  • Swivel Chair: It is equipped with universal wheels and a pneumatic height adjustment system at the bottom, allowing free rotation and height adjustment. It is the most widely used type in office scenarios, with core components including a seat cushion, backrest, five-star base, casters, and a pneumatic device.

Classification by Usage Scenario

  • Boss Chair: It typically features a high backrest and a wide design, paired with a leather surface and adjustable armrests. It has a reclining function, exuding an air of authority and comfort.
  • Employee Chair: It focuses on practicality and cost-effectiveness, often using adjustable mid-back mesh chairs to meet daily office needs.
  • Visitor Chair: It has a low design, facilitating easy entry and exit for visitors. It does not emphasize long-term comfort and is commonly found in offices or reception areas.

Classification by Functional Characteristics

  • Narrow-sense Office Chair: It is a basic backrest chair with a single function, primarily tasked with maintaining a correct sitting posture.
  • Broad-sense Office Chair: It includes executive chairs, staff chairs, conference chairs, etc., with varying designs and functions tailored to different scenarios.
  • Ergonomic Chair: It is scientifically designed to actively adapt to the human body's curves. Its core functions include lumbar support, multi-dimensional adjustments (such as headrest height and rotation, armrest multi-directional adjustments, and seat depth adjustments), and the use of breathable materials, aiming to enhance comfort during prolonged use.
