Office Chair Stitching

Admin October 08, 2026

The selection and repair of stitching for office chairs should be determined based on the material and stress conditions, as follows:

Material and Thread Selection

  • Leather or heavy-fabric office chairs: High-strength stitching is required, with high-strength nylon thread (polyamide thread) or polyester thread being the top choices. These threads have a breaking strength more than three times that of cotton threads of the same specification, and they offer excellent elasticity and wear resistance, capable of withstanding frequent stretching and friction from leather or heavy fabrics. When repairing, a special curved needle (bent needle) should be used. Its curved design facilitates penetration through heavy fabrics while avoiding scratches on the leather surface.
  • Ordinary fabric office chairs: High-quality polyester thread or polyester-cotton blended thread can meet daily needs. Polyester thread offers balanced performance in terms of strength, elasticity, and wear resistance, suitable for sewing ordinary fabrics. Polyester-cotton blended thread combines the softness of cotton thread with the durability of polyester, making it suitable for scenarios with higher comfort requirements.

Repair Techniques

  1. Assess the crack: Examine the length, depth, and location of the crack, and select matching thread and needles. For thick materials (such as leather), a curved needle is required, while a straight needle can be used for ordinary fabrics.
  2. Cleaning treatment: Clean the cracked area with a mild detergent and a soft cloth, ensuring it is dry. For leather cracks, sand the edges with fine sandpaper to remove burrs and enhance the adhesion of the glue.
  3. Sewing operation:
    • Thread the needle and tie a knot. Align and pinch the two sides of the crack to ensure the fabric is flat.
    • Insert the needle from the inside of one end of the crack, using either a flat seam or a lockstitch. A flat seam is suitable for straight cracks, while a lockstitch prevents the fabric edges from fraying. Maintain even and tight stitches.
    • When finishing, pass the needle through the loop multiple times and pull tight to tie a knot. Hide the knot inside the fabric to avoid affecting the appearance.
  4. Auxiliary tools: Prepare scissors (for trimming excess thread), a thimble (to protect fingers), and strong glue (only for auxiliary fixing of small cracks, choose a non-corrosive glue).

Special Techniques

Some office chairs use double-quilting techniques, where double stitching is used to secure the filling (such as sponge or memory foam) between fabric layers, creating a three-dimensional texture. This technique not only enhances support and distributes pressure but also improves durability and aesthetics, commonly found in the seat cushions and backrests of high-end office chairs. When repairing, pay attention to maintaining the symmetry and even tension of the double stitching.
