Office Chair Stitched Sponge

Admin October 11, 2026

The use of stitched sponge in office chairs exists, but stitched sponges can be divided into primary stitched sponge and recycled sponge, and recycled sponge has certain issues.

Primary Stitched Sponge: Some merchants refer to colorful shredded sponge as 'primary stitched sponge' and claim it is a normal process. According to the 'Recycled Sponge Test Report' provided by merchants, its formaldehyde content is qualified. Primary stitched sponge may be made by stitching together primary sponge scraps generated during the production process, such as offcuts. Under relevant quality standards, it can theoretically be used as a filling material for office chair cushions, but its stitching process and overall performance may not be as uniform and stable as a whole piece of primary sponge.

Recycled Sponge: Some seat manufacturing companies recycle sponge waste and re-bond it with glue to make 'recycled sponge' for seat cushions. This recycled sponge has an average cost about half that of primary sponge and is favored by some seat manufacturers. However, recycled sponge has many problems. Firstly, it may have a chemical odor. This is because the source of the recycled sponge waste is complex and may contain various chemicals that are difficult to completely remove during reprocessing. Secondly, it has poor elasticity and insufficient support. Compared to primary sponge, recycled sponge has its internal structure damaged through recycling and reprocessing, and cannot provide good elasticity and support. Long-term use can affect sitting posture and comfort, and may even have adverse effects on the waist, buttocks, and other areas. More seriously, recycled sponge may have excessive formaldehyde. Some manufacturers even assist in providing 'qualified' reports for formaldehyde and other tests, posing a potential threat to consumer health. Formaldehyde is a harmful gas, and long-term exposure can cause respiratory diseases, allergic reactions, and other health problems.

When purchasing office chairs, consumers should be cautious about products using stitched sponge, carefully understand the type and quality of the stitched sponge, and check relevant test reports to ensure that the product meets safety and quality standards.
