Office Chair Steel Tube and Air Bag

Admin October 09, 2026

In office chairs, the 'steel tube' and 'air bag' are functionally independent components with no direct combination relationship. Their functions and structures are as follows:

1. Pneumatic rod (gas spring): The core 'steel tube' structure for office chair height adjustment
The height adjustment function of an office chair relies on the pneumatic rod, whose main body is a 'steel tube' structure made of metal, including components such as the upright tube (outer shell), outer tube, cylinder tube (inner tube), and piston. The pneumatic rod achieves height adjustment through the pressure difference on both sides of the piston head: when the user sits down, the piston moves downward, compressing the gas in the inner tube, and the pressure difference pushes the outer tube upward; when the user stands up, the gas expands, pushing the piston back to its original position, lowering the seat. This process is entirely driven by air pressure and has nothing to do with the 'air bag'.
Key details:

  • The outer shell (steel tube) of the pneumatic rod needs to have high strength and pressure resistance, usually made of cold-rolled steel or aluminum alloy.
  • The outer tube surface is often engraved with brand, model, and safety certification information (such as SGS and TUV's EN16955 level certification). Users can judge product quality through these certification marks.
  • The pneumatic rod needs to pass level 3 or level 4 authoritative certifications. Uncertified products may pose an explosion risk due to poor sealing or material defects.

2. Auxiliary air bag: An independently adjustable component for local support
If an office chair is equipped with an air bag, its function is completely independent of the pneumatic rod and is mainly used for support adjustment of the lumbar pillow or seat cushion. For example, the lumbar pillow air bag can adjust its softness and hardness through inflation and deflation to adapt to the lumbar curves of different users; the seat cushion air bag can relieve the pressure from prolonged sitting. The adjustment of these air bags is done through side air valves. Users can press or rotate the air valves to control the inflow and outflow of gas, achieving dynamic adjustment of support force.
Key details:

  • Auxiliary air bags are usually made of high-strength rubber or TPU material to ensure pressure resistance and sealing.
  • The air bag has no mechanical connection with the pneumatic rod, and its inflation and deflation process does not affect the overall height of the seat.
  • Avoid rapid operation during adjustment to prevent damage to the air bag due to sudden pressure changes.

3. Safety tips: Function differentiation and usage specifications

  • Pneumatic rod safety: Choose pneumatic rods that have passed level 3 or level 4 certifications. Avoid using uncertified or low-priced products; keep the adjustment movements gentle to prevent piston deviation or seal ring wear.
  • Air bag maintenance: Regularly check the sealing of the air bag's air valve to prevent air leakage from causing support failure; if cracks or deformations appear on the air bag surface, replace it immediately.
  • Function differentiation: The pneumatic rod controls the seat height, and the air bag adjusts local support. The functions of the two should not be confused.
