Desoldering of Steel Pipe in Office Chairs

Admin October 09, 2026

The repair method for desoldering of steel pipes in office chairs should be selected based on the fracture location, load-bearing requirements, and material properties, as detailed below:

I. Non-welding Repair Methods

  1. Hardware Reinforcement Method
Suitable for loose or desoldered parts of wooden or metal chairs, especially non-load-bearing structures. Use hardware such as 90-degree right-angle brackets, triangular supports, or T-shaped/L-shaped connectors, and secure them to the fracture site with screws. This method is simple to operate and requires no professional skills, but it is essential to ensure that the hardware matches the chair's material to avoid secondary damage caused by uneven stress distribution.

  2. Glue Bonding Method
If the desoldered part is a non-load-bearing decorative element, first sand the interface surface to remove rust or oil stains, then apply woodworking glue or epoxy resin glue for temporary fixation. Note: Glue has weak shear resistance and is only suitable for low-load scenarios. Additionally, the environment must be kept dry to prevent glue failure.

  3. Combined Reinforcement Method
For minor desoldering in load-bearing parts, first bond the interface, and after the glue has partially cured, add rivets or screws at key stress points for secondary reinforcement. This method combines the flexibility of glue with the rigidity of metal parts, making it suitable for repairing areas with localized stress concentration.

II. Welding Repair Methods

If the fracture is in a load-bearing structure such as chair legs or crossbeams, and the steel pipe wall thickness exceeds 0.5 millimeters, it is recommended to contact a professional to re-weld using an electric welding machine. After welding, grind the weld seam and reinforce the welding point to increase stability. Precautions:

  • Welding hollow steel pipes with thin walls is challenging and may cause fractures in other parts due to thermal stress. In such cases, non-welding methods are recommended.
  • The welding repair cost for an ordinary iron chair is approximately 150-200 yuan, and repairing a single chair leg usually takes about half an hour.
  • If the chair is still under warranty, it is advisable to contact the merchant for a replacement or refund to avoid affecting after-sales rights due to self-repair.

III. Other Reinforcement Solutions

  1. Metal Plate Reinforcement
Drill holes at the fracture site and install a metal plate, suitable for key parts such as the connection between chair legs and crossbeams. The material cost is about 50 yuan. Ensure that the metal plate fits snugly against the chair's structure and is securely fastened with screws.

  2. Wooden Stick or Thin Tube Sleeve Connection
For fractures in hollow iron pipes, insert a wooden stick or thin metal tube with a matching diameter and secure it with glue. This method is suitable for temporary repairs, but long-term load-bearing may lead to failure due to material aging.

IV. Pre-repair Assessment and Post-repair Inspection

  • Pre-repair: Determine whether the fracture is in a load-bearing structure. If so, prioritize welding or replacing the part. Additionally, check for design flaws in the chair (such as thin steel pipe walls or poorly welded joints). If safety hazards persist after repair, contact the merchant for a replacement or refund.
  • Post-repair: Test the chair's stability to ensure there is no wobbling or unusual noise, avoiding secondary damage caused by improper repair.
