Starting Height of Office Chairs

Admin October 22, 2026

The starting height (lower limit of the standard height range) of adult office chairs is 40 centimeters. Here are the specific details:

Standard Range of Starting Heights

According to the national standard GB/T 3976-2014, the starting height of adult office chairs is typically designed within the range of 40 to 50 centimeters. This range is formulated based on ergonomic principles to meet the basic usage needs of most adults. Among them, 40 centimeters is the lower limit of the standard height, suitable for users who are relatively shorter or require a lower sitting posture; while 50 centimeters is the upper limit, suitable for taller users or those who need a higher sitting posture.

Basis for Adjusting Starting Heights

The starting height of office chairs is not fixed but needs to be adjusted individually according to the user's height. For example, it is recommended that individuals who are 160 centimeters tall adjust the starting height to 42 to 43 centimeters. This adjustment is based on the principle of "sitting comfort" in ergonomics, which states that when a user sits down, their feet should be able to rest flat on the ground, their thighs parallel to the ground, and their knees bent at approximately 90 degrees. If the chair is too high, it will cause the feet to hang in the air, increasing leg pressure; if the chair is too low, it will cause the knees to be higher than the hips, leading to lower back discomfort.

Practical Significance of Adjusting Starting Heights

Reasonably adjusting the starting height of office chairs not only enhances comfort but also prevents health issues caused by prolonged poor sitting postures, such as cervical spondylosis and lumbar spondylosis. For example, for users who are 170 centimeters tall, adjusting the chair height to around 45 centimeters ensures that their thighs are parallel to the ground and their knees are naturally bent when sitting down, thereby reducing pressure on the lower back and legs. Additionally, when adjusting the starting height, it is also necessary to consider the height of the desk to ensure they match and maintain an overall reasonable sitting posture.
