Office Chair Squeaking Sound

Admin October 11, 2026

The squeaking sound when leaning on an office chair is usually caused by loose screws, insufficient lubrication on the chassis pivot, worn parts, aging plastic components, or dry wheel bearings.

  1. Loose Screws
The screws at the connections of the chair back, armrests, and chassis gradually loosen due to long-term stress or frequent shaking, creating gaps between components. When leaning on the chair, the misaligned metal connections rub against each other, producing a "squeaking" sound, which is one of the most common causes.

  2. Insufficient Lubrication on the Chassis Pivot
For chairs with a reclining function, the internal metal springs and pivots, after long-term use, may have their lubricant dry up, leading to direct metal-to-metal friction. When leaning on the chair, the rotation of the pivot is obstructed, resulting in continuous abnormal sounds, which is a normal wear-and-tear phenomenon.

  3. Wear at the Connection between the Gas Lift and the Five-Star Base
The contact areas between the top of the gas lift and the chassis, and between the bottom of the gas lift and the five-star base, may develop gaps due to surface wear from long-term weight-bearing. When moving the body, the gas lift rubs against the metal components, producing a "creaking" sound, which is especially noticeable when reclining.

  4. Aging and Deformation of Plastic Frame Components
Low-priced office chairs often use thin plastic frames, which are prone to deformation under long-term pressure. The structural compression leads to gap friction, producing continuous abnormal sounds. Due to the irreversible deformation of plastic, such issues are usually difficult to completely repair.

  5. Dry and Stuck Wheel Bearings
When the chair is moved, the lack of lubricant in the wheel bearings can cause dry rolling, producing friction noise. Such abnormal sounds are often mistaken for issues with the main body of the chair, but they are actually related to the direction of force during movement.

Daily Maintenance Suggestions:

  • Tighten Screws: Use a screwdriver to check and tighten all connection screws, focusing on the chair back, armrests, and chassis areas.
  • Add Lubrication: Apply specialized lubricant to the metal pivots, the connection between the gas lift and the chassis, and the wheel bearings to reduce friction.
  • Inspect Components: If the plastic components are severely deformed or the gas lift has excessive wear gaps, replace the corresponding components to completely eliminate the abnormal sounds.

By conducting targeted inspections and simple maintenance, most abnormal sound issues can be effectively resolved.
