Office Chair Spring Testing

Admin October 12, 2026

Office chair spring testing primarily targets the lifting gas springs in seats, with the core objective of ensuring product safety and quality, preventing user injuries caused by defects in the gas springs.

Testing Items and Parameters

The testing items cover core mechanical properties, durability, and sealing performance, with specific parameters including:

  • Mechanical Properties: Initial activation force (the minimum force required to start), dynamic friction force (resistance during movement), nominal force (extension force, i.e., the supporting force of the gas spring during normal operation), spring force ratio (the proportional relationship between force and displacement), and locking force (the ability to maintain a stable position).
  • Durability: Cycle life (simulating fatigue life after long-term use), resistance to static lateral loads (the ability to withstand lateral pressure).
  • Environmental Adaptability: High and low-temperature environmental adaptability (performance stability at different temperatures).
  • Sealing Performance: Airtightness (preventing gas leakage) and oil tightness (preventing hydraulic oil leakage).

Testing Scope and Objects

The testing scope covers all stages from raw materials and semi-finished products to finished products, with finished product testing being the core, primarily targeting fully assembled and usable gas spring assemblies. In quality supervision and random inspections of furniture products, office chairs with gas springs must undergo testing for basic safety items to ensure no safety hazards during use. Testing objects include:

  • Gas Spring Monomer: Focus on supporting force, sealing performance, and lifespan.
  • Lifting Column Assembly: Focus on lifting smoothness, abnormal noise, and the quality of fit with the seat surface and chassis.
  • Assembled Complete Chair: Comprehensively evaluate the collaborative performance of the gas spring with other components.

Testing Instruments and Methods

  • Mechanical Property Testing: Use an electronic universal testing machine or a dedicated gas spring performance testing platform to collect force-displacement curves and calculate key indicators such as activation force, nominal force, and friction force.
  • Durability Testing: Adopt a dedicated fatigue testing machine to simulate the reciprocating motion of the gas spring under set strokes and frequencies, automatically recording the number of cycles until failure.
  • Airtightness Testing: Commonly use immersion testing devices (observe bubbles to judge leakage) or helium mass spectrometer leak detectors (high-precision detection of trace leakage).
  • Oil Tightness Testing: Evaluate by observing whether hydraulic oil leaks or changes in pressure.

Through systematic testing, it can be ensured that the gas springs in office chairs meet standards in terms of safety, reliability, and service life, reducing user risks.
