Office Chair Spring Replacement

Admin October 19, 2026

The method for replacing springs in an office chair depends on the type of spring and the nature of the damage, as detailed below:

Tray Spring (Reclining Adjustment Spring)

Refer to the replacement process for computer chair tray springs, but detailed steps are not provided. It is recommended to contact a professional repair technician or consult the repair manual for the corresponding model.

Backrest Spring

1. Prepare Tools: Pliers, screwdrivers, soldering iron (if soldering is required), calipers (for measuring specifications), etc.
2. Assess Damage:

  • Broken Spring:
    • Lay the office chair down and locate the damaged spring.
    • Use a screwdriver to unscrew the screws or release the clips securing the spring, and remove the broken spring.
    • Measure Specifications: Use calipers to measure the length, diameter, and number of coils of the spring, and record the material (e.g., stainless steel, carbon steel) and wire diameter (thickness of the spring wire).
    • Purchase Replacement Spring: Select a product with specifications and material similar to the original spring to ensure matching elasticity and load-bearing capacity.
    • Install New Spring: Fix the new spring in its original position, tighten the screws or secure the clips, and test the backrest's rebound for smoothness.
  • Loose Spring Connection:
    • Separate the backrest from the seat and inspect the connection points (e.g., solder joints, bolts, nuts).
    • Loose Solder Joints: Use a soldering iron to re-solder, ensuring the solder joints are full and free of cold solder.
    • Worn Connectors: Replace worn bolts, nuts, or clips, and reconnect the spring to ensure the backrest is stable and does not wobble.

Hydraulic Rod (Gas Spring)

The hydraulic rod is a one-time sealed component that requires complete replacement, with the following steps:
1. Safely Remove the Old Hydraulic Rod:
- Prepare Tools: Large pipe wrench, rubber mallet, gloves, safety goggles.
- Separate the Five-Star Base: Turn the chair upside down, use the pipe wrench to grip the metal collar connecting the hydraulic rod to the five-star base, and rotate counterclockwise (usually reverse-threaded) to remove it. Apply lubricating oil if necessary.
- Separate the Seat: If it is a "clip-spring type", use a screwdriver to pry open the metal clip and remove the hydraulic rod; if it is a "screw-fixed type", unscrew the central screw on the chassis.
2. Accurately Measure and Purchase a New Rod:
- Measure Dimensions: Total length (shortest when fully compressed), tube diameter (measure the outer tube diameter with calipers, common grades are Class3/Class4), and stroke (difference between maximum extension and minimum compression).
- Purchase New Rod: Bring the old rod or a photo of its dimensions, and select a product with the same specifications and safety certification (e.g., SGS/BIFMA), priced around 30-100 yuan.
3. Install the New Hydraulic Rod:
- Clean the threads or interfaces on the five-star base and seat chassis.
- Connect to the Five-Star Base: Align the bottom thread of the new rod with the five-star base and rotate clockwise to tighten (first by hand, then slightly tighten with the pipe wrench).
- Install the Seat: Insert the top end of the rod into the chassis and install the clip or fixing screw.
- Test: Place the chair upright, repeatedly raise and lower it, and check the locking function to ensure there is no jamming or air leakage.
