Office Chair Spring Installation
Admin October 09, 2026
Office chair spring installation can be divided into two types: tray spring installation and hydraulic rod (gas spring) installation. The specific installation steps are as follows:

Tray Spring Installation
- Preparation: Prepare tools such as a wrench. Place the office chair on a flat surface and it is advisable to lean it against a wall to prevent tipping.
- Removing the Old Spring: Turn the chair upside down with its back facing up. Use a wrench to loosen the fasteners (such as screws, nuts, or snap rings) on the spring and take out the old spring. If the fasteners are rusty, you can drip some lubricating oil to assist in removal.
- Selecting a New Spring: Ensure that the model of the new spring exactly matches that of the old one. Check that the spring surface has no cracks, deformations, or rust, and avoid using inferior accessories.
- Installing the New Spring: Align the bottom of the spring with the recess in the chair seat, press it in vertically, and confirm that it is fully embedded. If the spring is loose, use a snap ring or screw to reinforce it to prevent displacement during use.
- Testing and Adjustment: Turn the chair back to its front side and sit on it to test its stability. If the chair wobbles or sinks unevenly, recheck the installation position of the spring or whether the fasteners are tightened.
- Safety Precautions: Avoid using excessive force during operation to prevent tools from slipping or springs from popping out and causing injury. If you have doubts about the installation steps, be sure to refer to the instruction manual or contact after-sales service.
Hydraulic Rod (Gas Spring) Installation
- Safely Removing the Old Rod:
- Prepare tools: a large pipe wrench, a rubber mallet, gloves, and safety goggles.
- Separating the Five-Star Base: Turn the chair upside down. Use the pipe wrench to hold the metal collar connecting the hydraulic rod to the five-star base and rotate it counterclockwise (reverse thread) to remove it. If necessary, drip some lubricating oil.
- Separating the Chair Seat: If it is a "snap-ring type", use a screwdriver to pry open the snap ring and pull out the hydraulic rod. If it is a "screw-fixed type", unscrew the central screw on the chassis.
- Accurate Measurement and Purchase:
- Measure the total length (when fully compressed), the pipe diameter (measure the outer pipe diameter with calipers, commonly Class 3/Class 4), and the stroke (the difference between the maximum extension and compression).
- Bring the old rod or a photo of its dimensions and purchase a new rod of the same specification with SGS/BIFMA certification. The price is approximately 30-100 yuan.
- Installing the New Rod:
- Clean the interfaces: Wipe the threads or slots on the five-star base and the chair seat chassis with a dry cloth to remove oil stains or impurities.
- Connecting to the Five-Star Base: Align the bottom thread of the new rod with the five-star base and rotate it clockwise to tighten it (first tighten it by hand and then slightly reinforce it with a pipe wrench).
- Installing the Chair Seat: Insert the top end of the rod into the chassis, reinstall the snap ring or screw, and ensure a firm connection.
- Testing: Place the chair upright and raise and lower it 5-10 times repeatedly. Check whether the lifting is smooth and the locking is stable. If there is no jamming or abnormal noise, it is qualified.
