Office Chair Spring Clip Repair

Admin October 11, 2026

Repairing the spring clip of an office chair requires handling based on the specific damage situation. Here are common scenarios and methods:

If the spring clip causes the wheels to fall off

  1. Removing the old wheels: Turn the chair upside down. Use needle-nose pliers to grip the metal shaft of the wheel. Remove it by shaking it left and right and pulling it out with force. During this process, be careful to control the force to avoid breaking the metal shaft or damaging the chair's connecting components.
  2. Installing new wheels: Select new wheels that are exactly the same size as the original ones. Align them with the slots of the connecting components and press them in vertically until you hear a 'click' sound (indicating that the spring clip is fixed). If it is difficult to press in, adjust the angle of the wheels or use sitting pressure to assist with the installation to ensure that the wheels fit tightly with the connecting components.
  3. Precautions: Wheels of incorrect specifications can cause the chair's center of gravity to shift, affecting its stability during use and even posing safety hazards. Therefore, the size must be strictly matched.

If the spring clip causes the casters to jam (e.g., due to hair or fiber getting stuck)

  1. Removing the spring clip: Turn the chair over. Insert two flat-head screwdrivers from both sides of the caster near the shaft and pry them evenly to the sides to make the spring clip exit the caster structure. Keep the screwdrivers parallel to the shaft during operation to avoid deforming the spring clip due to excessive force.
  2. Cleaning foreign objects: Pull out the caster shaft and use tweezers or a fine needle to clean the entangled hair, fiber, and other foreign objects to ensure that there is no residue inside the caster. If the foreign objects are difficult to remove, a small amount of lubricant can be used to assist with the cleaning.
  3. Reassembling: Put the cleaned caster shaft back in place and press the spring clip back into its original slot to ensure that the spring clip is fully reset. After assembly, gently push the caster to check if it rotates smoothly.
  4. Precautions: The screwdrivers should be inserted close to the shaft. Use gentle force when tapping or prying to avoid damaging the caster or the spring clip structure.

If the spring clip is used for fixing the backrest spring

  1. Dealing with a broken spring: Unscrew the fixing screws or clips at the connection between the backrest and the seat. Remove the broken spring and measure its length, diameter, and other specification parameters. Select a new spring of the same specifications for installation. After tightening the screws, check if the rebound force of the backrest is normal.
  2. Dealing with loose connections: Separate the backrest from the seat and check if the welds are cracked or if the connecting components (such as bolts and nuts) are worn. If the welds are cracked, they need to be re-welded. If the connecting components are worn, they need to be replaced with new ones and installed firmly.
  3. General advice: Wear protective gloves and goggles during operation to avoid metal fragments scratching the skin or flying into the eyes. If the spring clip is broken, the connecting components are deformed, or the cause of the fault cannot be determined, it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel for handling to prevent secondary damage due to improper operation.
