Office Chair Spraying Tutorial

Admin October 10, 2026

The spraying of office chairs can be carried out in five steps: surface cleaning, sanding, base coat application, spray painting, and post-treatment:

Surface Cleaning: First, use tools to thoroughly clean the chair's surface of any peeling or old paint layers, ensuring a flat and residue-free surface. For areas with peeling paint and rust, use a towel or brush dipped in an appropriate amount of cleaner or diluted white vinegar to scrub vigorously, removing as much rust as possible to create a good foundation for subsequent spraying.

Sanding: Choose the appropriate sandpaper based on the roughness and hardness of the wood surface. In the production process of office chairs, the whiteๅฏ (unfinished wood) needs to be sanded with 320# sandpaper to remove stains, wood fibers, and splinters, making the surface flat. After filling nail holes, sand the surrounding area of the nail holes with 320# sandpaper to ensure no putty scars remain. After applying the base coat, sand with 320#, 220#, and then 320# to 600# sandpaper at different stages until the surface is free of highlights, smooth, flat, and free of sanding marks.

Base Coat Application: Adjust the viscosity of the base coat according to the density of the wood. Hardwood can be thinned, while softwood needs to be made more viscous. When applying the paint, brush it evenly along the wood grain, avoiding excessive thickness. After the base coat is completely dry, sand it until it feels smooth and free of protrusions, then wipe it several times with a damp soft cloth and dry it. In the production process of office chairs, for sealed boards, apply a sealer with a brush for 70 strokes, ensuring even and moist application. For clear base coats, apply one coat of 100 - 120, ensuring even application, good leveling, and no sagging. Then, apply 2 - 3 wet-on-wet coats of 100 - 120, also ensuring good leveling, no sagging, and no brush marks.

Spray Painting: Shake the spray paint can thoroughly, generally for about 2 minutes, to ensure uniform mixing of the paint. Cover the area around the chair and the floor with paper or plastic film to prevent spray paint from splashing onto unwanted areas. Choose an outdoor or well-ventilated indoor environment for spraying and wear a mask to prevent inhalation of harmful gases. Hold the spray paint can about 15 - 30 centimeters away from the chair's surface and start spraying in a zigzag pattern, applying small amounts multiple times to ensure even coverage. If the color is not prominent, wait for each layer of paint to dry before applying the next layer. Generally, it is recommended to apply 2 - 3 layers, maintaining a consistent angle between the spray paint can and the chair's surface during spraying.

Post-Treatment: After spraying is complete, place the chair in a well-ventilated area to dry naturally, avoiding direct sunlight or high-temperature baking. Depending on the situation, thinly dilute and spray transparent colored top coats or color modifiers multiple times, adjusting the spraying range from 150 - 200 as needed, ensuring even application. For clear top coats, spray at 180 - 200, ensuring no particles, good leveling, flatness, a good feel, and uniform gloss.
